Amazon Prime Video: Amazon Adds Showtime, Starz and More Channels for Additional Fee
Amazon Prime members will now be able to add even more channels to their Amazon Prime Video services for an additional fee, including Showtime, Starz and A&E Network.
Amazon announced the new Streaming Partners Program Tuesday, CNet reports. With the Streaming Partners Program, Amazon Prime members can add even more programming and channels by purchasing the content a la carte.
Amazon Prime members can add Showtime to their Prime Video services for $9 per month. That is in addition to the $99 they pay per year for all of their Amazon Prime benefits. With the Showtime channel added to the Prime Video lineup, Amazon members will be able to watch the latest TV episodes at the same time as cable viewers.
Amazon is trying to remain competitive with Netflix, Hulu and cable companies by offering as much content as possible. Customers are changing the way they watch TV, with many streaming programming and cutting their cable cords. As competition among streaming services increases, customers want to be offered just as much content for cheaper prices.
HBO and Showtime already offer their own subscription plans, but with Amazon Prime, customers receive all of the content they already receive with Amazon Prime Video, plus the channels they choose to add.
Prime members only need one account and one watch list to participate in the program. If they do not want a channel any longer, they can drop it at any time.
The Showtime and Starz channels will come with all of the same programming as the cable channels have. On the A&E Network, only the Lifetime Movie Club content will be available, and on the AMC channel, only Shudder and the SundanceNow Doc Club content will be available.
Starz will cost $9 per month, Acorn TV will run $5 per month, and Lifetime Movie Club and Smithsonian Earth will each cost $4 per month.
