Imagine if Studio Ghibli made a Zelda movie.

Not too long ago, artist Matt Vince created a series of posters for a Zelda movie as if it were directed by legendary director Hayao Miyazaki.

Of course the chances of that are currently minimal with Miyazaki announcing his feature film retirement after his last film "The Wind Rises." Moreover, the studio itself has done next to nothing in recent years as a result.

Nintendo has been clear it plans to enter cinema in coming years, and while it is unlikely to acquire the studio anytime soon, there could be hope in the future for a potential marriage of some sort. The two companies are based out of Japan and there would undoubtedly be no reason to doubt that a Zelda game could be right up Ghibli's alley.

A "Zelda" adaptation is always a rather complex proposition, mainly because Link is a silent character in the games. Yet under Ghibli, it might be possible to follow Zelda as the main character. Miyazaki was known for his female protagonists, and his films spanned a number of themes, genres and time periods. "Princess Mononoke" takes place in a feudal Japan and centers around a battle for equilibrium between civilization and nature. Just looking at how that film functions provides a potential outlet for how a Zelda movie could work under Ghibli's tutelage.

Of course there is no knowing whether or not this is truly realistic, but the reality is that Nintendo has not been particularly forward with its intentions on creating new movies for its major franchises. While live action would be great, Zelda could work better in animation, retaining some of its cartoonish aspects that have dominated more recent entries in the franchise.
