A pilot has been praised as a hero after he successfully made an emergency landing in a private jet in southern California even though the landing gear failed to open.

Video footage captured the pilot landing the small plane on its belly in Palm Springs last Friday around 3:20 p.m. after the aircraft's wheels failed to eject, reports News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2. Despite the malfunction, the pilot still managed to safety land the place at the Palm Springs International Airport Friday, officials said.

In the video, which was obtained by NBC, the plane is seen descending as it approaches the runway. Once it hits the ground, it appears to smoothly glide across the pavement before coming to a full stop near the end of the runway. A firetruck then sprays the bottom of the plane to prevent a fire from igniting.

Officers with the Palm Springs Police Department and Riverside County firefighters were called to be on hand at the airport just in case the landing caused any after effects.

Fortunately, neither the pilot nor the one other person on the jet were injured in the landing.
Following the incident, the long runway was closed for more than 45 minutes and a few couple other aircrafts were delayed, said Tom Nolan with the Palm Springs International Airport.

The names of the pilot or passenger were not disclosed, not is it clear where the plane was flying in from.

Back in October, 100 aboard a Venezuela-bound commercial passenger plane got the scare of their lives when their plane caught on fire upon takeoff in Florida. Federal officials say that the Dynamic Airways Boeing 767 caught fire on the runway while preparing for departure from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, reports NBC News. The incident occurred when a taxiing engine burst into flames on Dynamic International Airways' flight 405.

Firefights managed to put out the blaze with foam. Meanwhile, the 100 passengers evacuated via the plane's emergency slides, reports WSVN.

Although there were no fatalities, about 21 travelers were taken to Broward Health Medical Center where they were treated for mostly minor injuries.
