Fight Preview
Saunders and Lee initially were said to collide in September, but Lee was sick so it was postponed to an October schedule. Yet, Saunders reportedly sustained an eye injury while training, which led to a December showdown.
This is the 31-year-old champion's second defense of his crown. He captured the vacant title from his bout against Matt Korobov in December last year in Las Vegas, per BoxRec. His first title defense against Peter Quillin in April in New York resulted to a draw but was ruled as a non-title match because the challenger reportedly failed to make the weight.
Meanwhile, the unbeaten "Superb" just came out of an impressive fourth round knockout against Yoann Bloyer in July at Wembley Arena in London, per BoxRec. The 26-year-old warrior posts 12 knockout victories out of his 22 total wins, for a KO rating of 55 percent.
Predictions
Majority of the sport's experts are in favor of Lee, The Ring informed.
World Boxing Association lightweight titleholder Anthony Crolla thinks it is a "genuine 50/50 fight with two fantastic fighters."
"I see the first half of the fight being Billy Joe's and the second half being Andy Lee's. I can't pick a winner; it's such a close fight," Crolla said.
Tom Loeffler, promoter of International Boxing Organization, International Boxing Federation and WBA king Gennady Golovkin, is in favor of Lee.
"This looks to be a very competitive fight but I would lean toward Andy Lee because of his greater world title experience and power by decision," Loeffler shared.
WBA "regular" middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs also picks Lee as his victor.
"I'm rooting for Andy Lee because I think that's a bigger fight for me," Jacobs stated.
What's next for the Lee-Saunders winner?
The winner may be facing Jacobs next, promoter Lou Dibella suggested per Boxing Scene. Another Boxing Scene report informed that Loeffler is interested for the victor to engage in a battle with his fighter, Golovkin.
Thus, the winner can get the chance to add three more world champion titles to his WBO belt. Will he be up for it?
