Just last week, news emerged that an off duty police officer fired his gun at a robbery suspect, killing the suspect in the process. As per CBS Baltimore, both The Anne Arundel County and Baltimore City Police Department s have been doing their best to expedite the process in having the incident resolved.

Baltimore City Police Department identified the robbery suspect as Edel Moreland. In addition to their investigation, it was discovered that Moreland has been homeless for quite a while. As the investigation moved forward, it was discovered that the 18-year veteran officer was not in his uniform when he was attacked by the robbery suspect near the 100 block of Homewood Road. The gunshots were heard just after 1:30 am on Saturday within the street of Linthicum Heights as per CBS' reports.

Lt. Ryan Frashure of Anne Arundel County Police told CBS Baltimore that the officer was asked for his wallet, to which he reached though his bag as if doing what Moreland was telling him.

"He had just gotten off work. He had his duty weapon inside of a bag and when the suspect asked for his wallet, he reached into his bag like he was getting his wallet, that's when he shot the suspect because he was pointing the gun at him."

Frashure then told CBS that the gun that the officer fired several shots at Moreland as an act of self-defense.  He then added that, apparently, the gun that Moreland used for the robbery was actually a toy gun which looked realistic.

"It appears that this is a robbery gone wrong and the officer fired in self-defense, one of those pieces of evidence was a toy gun. That was very realistic. It looked like a black revolver. That's believed what the suspect pointed at the officer."

Frashure described the incident as "unfortunate series of events" as no officer would want to fire his weapon on anyone without a legitimate reason.

"No officer wants to kill anybody much less use his service weapon if he doesn't have to. This was just an unfortunate series of events,"

Fox News then reported that Frashure told WJZ that the officer that shot Moreland is currently on administrative leave. His leave would be ongoing up until the investigation into the shooting would be resolved. As for the latest reports that the station has released, the evidence found at the crime scene backs up the officer's claim on what had happened.
