Asthma Epidemic Plateaued and Declined in Recent Years but Remains a Threat Among Children
Countless children have been plagued with asthma all throughout the years and it's been a recurring problem over the past few decades. As per CNN, recent studies revealed that asthma cases on children have continually plateaued which is a good thing for most areas. But for children living in within the South, the poor, preteens and teens, it's a different story.
As per studies reported in AAP Gateway, the results may have plateaued and even decreased but it is not an indication of wellness.
The studies that were published in Pediatics came up with the results which states: "Overall, childhood asthma prevalence increased from 2001 to 2009 followed by a plateau then a decline in 2013. From 2001 to 2013, multivariate logistic regression showed no change in prevalence among non-Hispanic white and Puerto Rican children and those in the Northeast and West; increasing prevalence among 10- to 17-year-olds, poor children, and those living in the South; increasing then plateauing prevalence among 5- to 9-year-olds, near-poor children, and non-Hispanic black children; and increasing then decreasing prevalence among 0- to 4-year-olds, nonpoor, and Mexican children and those in the Midwest. Non-Hispanic black-white disparities stopped increasing, and Puerto Rican children remained with the highest prevalence."
As for the study's conclusion which was can also be read on Pediatrics, asthma prevalence no longer increased for young children and non-Hispanic black-white as per the team's findings: "Current asthma prevalence ceased to increase among children in recent years and the non-Hispanic black-white disparity stopped increasing due mainly to plateauing prevalence among non-Hispanic black children."
These details were acquired from the analysis gathered by National Health Interview data. Additional details of the studies will be published in the January edition of Pediatrics. In addition to CNN's report, the researchers stated that they will be needing "more years' worth" of information in order for them to come into conclusion as to whether the studies trend in asthma epidemic was reversed or if it is just a minimal change.
CNN then added that kids who are located within the South, with ages between 10 and 17 and children who are less fortunate, asthma rates continually increased. Racial disparities can also be a factor in terms of monitoring the asthma rates.
As per WMUR, it is important to take extra precautions when a home has children who are suffering with asthma. Air filters can be of great help and it is important to make sure that the house should at least be dust free.
It was also stated that most pets should be off limits in the bathroom and also the living room. Dust mites should also be taken care of.
