Aaron Hernandez News Update: New Trial Date in Double Murder Case Expected to set This Week
A new trial date is expected to be set this week in the double-murder trial of former NFL star Aaron Hernandez.
The Boston Herald reports Hernandez is scheduled to appear for a pretrial hearing on Tuesday, where he is expected to learn of his fate on the matter. He has already pleaded not guilty in the case.
The 26-year-old former New England Patriot's tight end is charged as the trigger-man in the 2012 drive-by killings of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu outside a downtown Boston nightclub.
Prosecutors have theorized Hernandez opened fire on both unsuspecting victims as they sat at a red light after one of them accidentally spilled a drink on him earlier in the evening and failed to apologize.
Hernandez is already serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole after recently being convicted of the 2013 execution styled killing of former associate Odin Lloyd.
Jury selection in the double slaying was initially set to start this month in Suffolk Superior Court, but the judge recently moved to delay the proceedings while both sides haggled over evidence that should be allowed to be heard.
Since being incarcerated at the Souza-Baranowski maximum security prison, Hernandez has also run into his share of difficulties. He was recently moved to an even more secluded area of the prison after a sweep of his cell turned up a homemade shank.
Hernandez also recently appeared for another court appearance sporting a freshly done jailhouse tattoo on his neck, which some prison officials have speculated is representative of his prison gang affiliations.
Prior to be taking into custody in connection with the Lloyd killing, Hernandez had just signed a $40 million extension with the Patriots as one of Hall of Fame bound quarterback Tom Brady's favorite new targets.
The Patriots have since taken steps to void the remainder of his contract.
