Gucci Stirs Twitter Complaints Over Plans to Turn Westminster Abbey Into Catwalk
For the first time in centuries, the Westminster Abbey will be a venue for a fashion show this year. Gucci has revealed its plan to take its runway to the halls of the iconic church this June, according to The Telegraph. However, this decision to hold the event inside the church raised several questions from Twitter users.
Twitter users have mixed reactions following confirmation that Gucci will unveil its cruise 2017 collection at the Cloisters of the Westminster Abbey. Vanessa Friedman, who Mail Online identified as the style director for the New York Times, raised her doubts over this on her Twitter.
Her tweet received mixed responses from other Twitter users. One pointed out the church is not fit to be turned into a runway because it is holy. Meanwhile, another user thought that it would be a form of disrespect from Gucci's end to have its fashion event at the Westminster Abbey.
However, other Twitter users thought having Gucci’s fashion show at the Cloisters of the Westminster Abbey is actually quite interesting. One Twitter user named John Z. stated that it’s not weird for the ancient church to host the event since it was supposedly also used as a community center in the middle ages. Meanwhile, Twitter user Driss pointed out that there are other weird places a fashion show can take place, and Westminster Abbey is not one of them.
"Not really. Bear in mind the countless generic office buildings, bus garages and other tedious places you've been at for fashion shows held in other weird places such as that," he wrote in response to Friedman's tweet.
A representative of Westminster Abbey likewise told Mail Online that there have been positive responses over Gucci's decision to turn the Cloisters into a fashion runway. The rep said the church has also taken the daily worship into consideration when they agreed to host the event.
"In terms of the future, the Dean and Chapter of Westminster are always prepared to consider new and exciting innovations provided they do not disrupt the daily pattern of worship, which has continued uninterrupted here for over a thousand years," the representative told Mail Online.
Alessandro Michele, the creative director for Gucci, confirmed the fashion show event at the Cloisters of the Westminster Abbey last week. He told The Telegraph in an exclusive interview that he is looking forward to the "magical" show. Michele also revealed his decision to take Gucci's runway inside the church is partly because of his obsession with British culture.
