Women in the Spotlight: US Treasurer Rosie Rios Speaks at LUNA, Women in Finance Symposium
Women are in the spotlight Thursday, May 1, with two events.
At the Latinos Uniting & Networking for Advancement, hosted by Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Rosie Rios will be the keynote speaker. Second Lady Jill Biden will also be present, according to PR Newswire.
The event takes place in Washington, D.C.
LUNA receptions help members of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund to network and meet professionals and community leaders invested in the advancement of higher education. Biden, who is a community college teacher, is rightfully at home at this event. Rios was a recipient of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund previously and has been a support to other women in the finance industry.
"We are honored to have Dr. Jill Biden and Treasurer Rosie Rios attend our LUNA reception," President and CEO of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund Fidel A. Vargas said. "The support of these influential and accomplished professionals validates HSF's commitment to furthering higher education in the U.S. Hispanic community."
This event will take place after the Women in Finance Symposium, which also took place in Washington, D.C., and featured Rosie Rios as well. The event focuses on investment opportunities and innovation in the economic recovery.
Rios was joined by other speakers, such as Valerie Jarrett, the senior advisor to the president, and Jack Lew, the secretary of the treasury.
Rios is the sixth Latina to hold her office.
She was raised in Hayward, California, and she attended Harvard University. She was sworn in to her office on August 2009.
Her name has been printed on 27 billion dollar notes.
"Currency and coins are the way we touch the American public every day," she said to BBC Mundo. "We are part of history."
Though she's very proud of her heritage, she said that her background does not influence her everyday role. And she continues to be a big supporter of other women.
"The more we recognize that role women play, the more it will inspire future generations to also think about a career in finance and economics," she said.
