Gina Rodriguez on Why She Started #MovementMondays: 'If We Want Latinos in the Oscars, We NEED to Support One Another'
Gina Rodriguez is spreading the message of empowerment and acceptance throughout the Latino community and beyond. The "Jane the Virgin" star has emerged with a social media project dubbed #MovementMondays. The project aims to create a more diverse view in Hollywood and society, especially among Latino talents.
"It's me doing it to uplift and highlight and empower other Latinos," the actress said in an interview. "To send the message that there's a lot of wonderful and positive things going on in our community -- that's what we should focus on."
So far, Rodriguez has featured big Hollywood names with Latino backgrounds including Oscar Isaac, America Ferrera, Eva Longoria and director Robert Rodriguez. However, she says that she's willing to highlight other members of the Latino community on her social media sites, even those outside of her star-studded realm.
The viral project started out innocently as she was trying to spread important information to the people around her, specifically the Latino crowd.
"I think that the more that I do this, the more information and education will be given out [about] our power, and what we can do as a community when we untie together and start using our power for good," Rodriguez explained.
She is urging people to speak up and tell everyone the people they are looking forward to seeing on screen or affecting change around them.
In a post on WhoSay, Rodriguez wrote about the diversity problem in Hollywood. She said that the way to combat the lack of Latino artists in the industry is by showing everyone that Latinos support their own. The Oscar buzz spurred her to create the campaign. She also wants to bring together the Latino community and show the industry its power to back Latinos in Hollywood.
"If you want to see us represented on film and tv, if you want to see Latinos nominated for Oscars, we need to support one another," she wrote. "The industry sees money, the excuse can't be racism. We can make a difference in a very powerful way if we unite our support as one Latino community."
In particular, Rodriguez talked about Isaac's Oscar-worthy performance in "Ex Machina."
Also in one of her #MovementMondays posts, Rodriguez celebrated diversity in television and praised some of the Latina actresses on the small screen. These include Ferrera, Longoria, Diana-Maria Riva, Jadyn Douglas, Andrea Navedo and Ivonne Coll.
