Despite low reviews from critics and mediocre approval from audience members, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" has captured $35.5 million in its web during its opening weekend so far.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the sequel to "The Amazing Spider-Man," which relaunched the Spidey franchise in 2012, raked in $8.7 million from its Thursday night viewings.

The film, which stars Andrew Garfield as the lead role and titular hero and Emma Stone as Peter Parker's high-school sweetheart Gwen Stacy, marks the fifth Spider-Man film to come out in 14 years. The previous "Spider-Man" trilogy featured Tobey Maguire donning the red and blue spandex and Mary Jane Watson played by Kirsten Dunst.

The original "Spider-Man" film, directed by Sam Raimi, earned $114 million its opening weekend, making it the most successful box office opening at the time (before being taken down by Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" in 2008 with $158 million).

Garfield's second film in the current franchise trailed close behind fellow Marvel superhero Captain America's second film, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," bringing in $37 million from its Friday opening last month. The Captain America sequel brought home $95 million domestically in its opening weekend.

The Times reported that "Amazing Spider-Man 2" is projected to also rake in the same amount as the Captain once the weekend is over.

Critics' reviews so far have praised Stone and Garfield's performance in Marc Webb's film but have criticized its plot and heavy-use of villains.

"'The Occasionally Amazing Spider-Man 2' might be a better way to think of the not-always-spectacular but sometimes satisfying Spider-Man sequel," Times critic Betsy Sharkey wrote. "Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone remain the best things about the reimagined superhero franchise."

The Washington Post's Ann Hornady also wrote that the film is a "strenuously chipper but nonetheless saggy, baggy and mostly ho-hum addition to the Spider-Man canon." She added, "Granted, there are at least two genuinely breathtaking set pieces to be admired here. ... But those moments are nearly lost within an unforgivably long assemblage that never coalesces into a compelling story."

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is out now and reunites Garfield and Stone with Sally Field. Joining the cast are Jamie Foxx, who plays the central antagonist, Dane DeHaan, Paul Giamatti and B.J. Novak.
