Thalía, Lucero, Gabriela Spanic, Edith González and Fernando Colunga are five of the telenovela actors who cemented there status in telenovela history with iconic roles in the 90s. Their telenovelas are some of the most popular dramas in Latin America.

Gabriela Spanic


Venezuelan actress Gabriela Spanic was immortalized as one of the best stars to play two roles in one telenovela with "La Usurpadora." The 1998 telenovela, which required Spanic to play the villain and the protagonist, became one of the most popular telenovelas of all time.

Along with the overly-dramatic plotline, Spanic's villainous voice and attitude became classic hallmarks for antagonist roles in telenovelas for years to come.

The actress has continued to act in Spanish-language dramas. Her most recent work includes "La otra cara del alma" and "Siempre Tuya Acapulco," which aired in 2014.

Lucero


Singer and actress, Lucero, otherwise known as "Latin America's sweetheart," starred in iconic telenovelas like "Lazos de Amor", which is now being remade with Angelique Boyer as the popular triplets who were all played by Lucero.

Lucero has had roles in nine telenovelas but has also appeared in several films, theater productions and hosted a variety of events and award shows, most recently the first-ever Latin American Music Awards in 2015.

Her fame over the years has also included prasie and recognition as a music artist. She has released over 24 albums and performs in a variety of genres, including Latin pop, mariachi, ranchera and dance.

Edith González

Edith González has had telenovela roles in several major networks including Telemundo, Televiza and TV Azteca. She played the lead role in "En carne propia," "La sombra del otro" and "Nunca te olvidaré." One of her most popular roles was playing Mónica de Altamira in period drama " Corazón salvaje."

González has appeared in over 30 telenovelas, including the original "Lo imperdonable," which was recently remade and starred Ana Brenda Contreras in the lead role. González is currently starring in "Eva la trailera."

Thalía

Perhaps the most successful telenovela star of the 90s is Thalía. The actress and singer starred in a variety of cherished Spanish-language dramas, such as "Marimar," "María La Del Barrio," "María Mercedes" and "Rosalinda."

Her roles usually included being a poor, beautiful and young woman who dreams of being rich and falls in love for some handome, rich man.

Since then Thalía has become one of the biggest Latin music popstars and has also taken on fashion design with various clothing collections, including her recent collection for Macy's.

Fernando Colunga

Longtime telenovela star and heartthrob, Fernando Colunga is a favorite male lead of Spanish-language drama fans. Why? Because he has played the leading man in telenovelas starring all of the leading ladies mentioned above.

Colunga's career includes roles in "Alondra," Marimar," "La Usurpadora," Esmeralda" and "María la del Barrio." The Mexican actor has appeared in 25 different telenovelas and has appeared in a few films.

His most recent film, released in 2015, was "Ladrones." The comedy is a sequel to "Ladrón que Roba a Ladrón."
