Gennady Golovkin is nearing his voluntary fight against Dominic Wade this April 23 before setting his attention on WBC middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez once again.

Aside from Alvarez, Golovkin is one of the many fighters who wants to try and land a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. In the event that happens, Mayweather is still the favorite as voiced out by legendary trainer Freddie Roach.

Golovkin is, of course, more concerned on reality. With all due respect to Wade, Golovkin is simply trying to keep himself in shape for a possible showdown with Alvarez. But the problem right now is even that mega fight leaves no certainty with issues still on the table.

At the top of the heap is the catchweight clause which Alvarez is batting for. The Mexican made it clear that he is done handing out privileges to his opponents. He got the raw end of that one, losing to Mayweather via unanimous decision.

Uncertainty with Alvarez

With that in mind, someone from either side will have to budge at some point to make it happen. Failure to do so will mean that this fight will not take place as forecasted later this year.

Everything depends on the WBC who critics believe will not side with Alvarez on the stipulation. Golovkin wants the fight to take place at the natural middleweight class (160 lbs.), which is likely the route the WBC will follow.

If Alvarez doesn’t abide by it, he could be stripped of the WBC title which may eventually fall at the hands of Triple G without working a sweat.

How About Billy Joe Saunders?

Billy Joe Saunders was someone who would have faced Golovkin this April but the Briton wanted a better offer. He was given a $2 million fight purse but backpedalled a bit with the intent of a better package.

Fight talks eventually fizzled which paved the way for Golovkin vs. Wade. Saunders, on the other hand, will be facing a less-heralded Max Bursak but made it clear that they still want to secure a fight against the Kazakh knockout artist.

Why Not Floyd?

If Alvarez and Saunders continue to hold out, Golovkin could end up trying to bait Mayweather instead despite the American reiterating he is through with the sport.

Golovkin trainer Abel Sanchez believes that a fight involving Triple G and Mayweather could happen sooner or later with a lot of sense.

He joins a long list of critics who believe Mayweather will return at some point to break the 49-0 deadlock with Rocky Marciano and bats that Golovkin is the perfect opponent.

Both are undefeated and Mayweather could be intrigued by the power of Golovkin that could become a challenge for the American boxer.

Both fighters have contrasting styles with Golovkin known to going for the KO and Mayweather carrying an elusive style. In fact, Mayweather did mention last month that Golovkin would be easy work if both of them were to face off.

Right now, it may take a lot to get Mayweather to return to the ring. Golovkin’s run may not be enough to get him to don his trunks though money could. But is Triple G vs. Floyd Mayweather a blockbuster fight fans would love to see?
