Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced he has revoked the press credentials of a major U.S. newspaper -- the same newspaper the revealed the Watergate scandal.

Trump: "Phony & Dishonest"

In a statement made just a couple hours after delivering a terrorism-related speech from New Hampshire, in response to the Orlando shooting terror attack, Trump announced the press credentials for the Washington Post has been revoked due to "phony and dishonest" coverage and reporting.

His statement, in full via Facebook, states, "Based on the incredibly inaccurate coverage and reporting of the record setting Trump campaign, we are hereby revoking the press credentials of the phony and dishonest Washington Post."

Trump's decision came after the newspaper, currently owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, published an article titled, "Donald Trump suggests President Obama was involved with Orlando shooting." Trump also commented about the aforementioned headline, saying while he isn't a supporter of President Barack Obama, the Washington Post was "dishonest" in their headline.

In a slightly more detailed statement, the Trump campaign accused the newspaper of working for "clicks" rather than journalistic integrity.

"They have no journalistic integrity and write falsely about Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump does not mind a bad story, but it has to be honest. The fact is, The Washington Post is being used by the owners of Amazon as their political lobbyist so that they don't have to pay taxes and don't get sued for monopolistic tendencies that have led to the destruction of department stores and the retail industry," the Trump campaign said in a statement on late Monday.

Post Reacts to Ban, Will Continue Reporting on Trump

In a statement from the Washington Post, the newspaper noted the Trump campaign did not notify them about their press credentials being revoked and only found out through the Republican presidential candidate's Facebook post.

Washington Post Executive Editor Martin Baron said in a statement, "Donald Trump's decision to revoke The Washington Post's press credentials is nothing less than a repudiation of the role of a free and independent press. When coverage doesn't correspond to what the candidate wants it to be, then a news organization is banished."

"The Post will continue to cover Donald Trump as it has all along - honorably, honestly, accurately, energetically and unflinchingly. We're proud of our coverage, and we're going to keep at it," Baron added.

It's not the first time the Trump campaign encountered trouble with other media organizations, whether domestic or international. The New York Times, BuzzFeed and Politico and the Des Moines Register are among the organizations that have had press credentials denied at select Trump events.
