'Hamilton' Star Lin-Manuel Miranda to Exit Broadway Show, His Replacement Revealed
Lin-Manuel Miranda is planning to depart from the cast of the award winning "Hamilton" in early July.
Miranda announced he will be leaving the Pulitzer Prize winning production on July 9, and will formally be replaced in the production by understudy Javier Muñoz two nights later.
'Hamilton' Dominates Tony Awards
News of Miranda's departure comes just days after the Alexander Hamilton-themed production claimed 11 Tony Awards out of a record-setting 16 nominations, including two by Miranda himself.
Still, Miranda recently displayed he's come to fully understand the fickle nature of show business.
"Flash forward to a few years when you are going to be so sick of me playing Hamilton," he said of his decision to now exit stage left. "Because I have written this character that I cannot age out of. I intend to drop in on this thing over and over again. I want to cut to 20 years from now, when you're like 'Lin, when will you stop playing Hamilton.'"
What's Next for Miranda?
As for what comes next, Miranda is rumored to be composing music for Disney's upcoming animated film "Moana" and will also star alongside Emily Blunt in the upcoming production of "May Poppins Returns," set to be released around Christmastime 2018.
In addition, a film version of his Broadway hit "In the Heights" is now in production.
Miranda's "Hamilton" Tony nominations included Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical.
In the end, Miranda claimed two of the three awards, losing the Best Performance by an Actor nomination to fellow "Hamilton" costar Leslie Odom, Jr.
Besides being by Miranda's side since the early days of "Hamilton," Muñoz also served as his replacement on "In the Heights."
