All new Tesla will feature Level 5 capable autopilot hardware
Telsa CEO Elon Musk recently announced, all Tesla vehicles will come with the hardware necessary for full autonomous driving. Though, the current current Autopilot system is capable of Level 2 autonomy, it is also capable of Level 5 operation.
According to R&T, Musk said in a press call that "it'll take us some time" before Tesla can offer such advanced software to the public, but that this hardware lays the groundwork that will allow the company to do this.
Autopilot Hardware 2 features the new equipment suite utilizes eight surround cameras, with 12 updated ultrasonic sensors, forward-facing radar returns, but gets a processing upgrade and a new redundant wavelength that provides additional data.
On October 19, 2016 Tesla announced says that Model 3 will be the new Hardware 2 suite. Also, the new hardware spec are already in production for Model S and Model X vehicles and available for purchase as stated by MotorTrend.
In order to ensure that the improvements work as intended, before activating all of the new features, Tesla will run the sensors in "shadow mode" over millions of miles which means that for a time many first-gen Autopilot features, won't be available. Tesla also promises new features for models equipped with Hardware 2, but earlier models with the first-gen system will be out of luck.
The enhanced Autopilot will start rolling out in Dec 2016 for $3000. As for the self driving suite, it cost $8000. Tesla says that with the new software, you would not be needing any human input to drive. The best part that makes makes the hardware stand out and possible is the new onboard computer with more than 40 times the computing power of the unit crunching data in previous Autopilot systems. This has bring in a lot of excitement for car lovers, and are looking forward to enjoy the hardware!
