Updates on iPhone 8: One of iPhone's key display suppliers is investing big in OLED
There were several reports that say next year's iPhone 8 will be switching to OLED. One of the primary suppliers of Apple is reported making a big investment with their display technology. The previous LCD panels in the previous years will soon be replaced by OLED.
According to Slash Gear, Apple is gearing up to acquire a Japanese display manufacturer named Joled. Joled started last 2015 as a combined company of Panasonic and Sony's organic light-emitting diode business to minimize production costs. It is one of the two left Japanese companies who are producing screens. Meanwhile, Innovation Network Corp. of Japan (INCJ) owns 75-percent of Joled. With such, the innovation of Apple's supplier-Japan Display will cost more than $100 million.
Meanwhile, even without Apple and the next-generation iPhone as motivation, there are other good things why Japan Display should pursue its footprint in OLED technology. The company was formed in 2012 after the panel businesses of Hitachi, Sony, and Toshiba joined together in order to cut LCD production costs.
Now that there is something new to come on iPhone, it remains Apple's big cash-cow. The company's switching transition into OLED will potentially take advantage of the screen technology's support for the upcoming curved iPhone 8 display.
OLED iPhone 8 could be pretty beneficial for the company as it continues to find every possible way in which it could save on power. Another of OLED's advantages is the thinness of its panel. Each of the pixels is its own source of light so it will not require separate backlight as LCD does. If iPhone will have OLED in the future, there will be slimmer handsets and their displays are bright, while still providing room for larger batteries.'
On the other hand, Bloomberg reported that Apple had gone into supply problems in the past. An example was its partnership with GT Technologies Inc. which was not able to deliver enough sapphire glasses for the iPhone 6 in 2014. Consequently, Apple left the partnership and jus used stronger screens.
Overall, OLED will give a brighter future for Apple and for its users literally and not. So stay tuned for more updates!
