Google Nexus News & Updates: How to Install, Upgrade Nexus 6 to Android 7.1
Google has always been diligent on providing to its devices the fastest and latest firmware updates, but users of Nexus smartphones are starting to get wary on when the tech giant will actually be giving the Android 7.1 Nougat update to the Nexus 6. Google has already rolled out the Android 7.1.1. update with the promise that it will arrive soon to some of its devices, including the Nexus 6.
"Today, and over the next several weeks, the Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus Player, Pixel C, and General Mobile 4G (Android One) will get an over the air (OTA)) software update to Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Any devices enrolled in the Android Beta Program will also receive this final version," wrote Android Product Manager Agustin Fonts in Google blog site.
As per NSEAVOICE, however, there is now a way for Nexus 6 users to experience Android 7.1. using other sources like CyanogenMod which has recently launched a custom ROM that caters for the device. Users who can no longer wait for Google to fulfill its promise can manually install the update to their devices.
Considering that CyanogenMod is a third-party, this update is only for brave souls but the media outlet assured that the CM14.1, which the Android 7.1 Nougat update is called, is a stable build. Furthermore, it is reportedly free of any major software issues.
Before the installation, users need to download and install USB drivers for Nexus 6 on a computer. Make sure also that the USB Debugging option is enabled by pressing Menu>Settings>Applications and further navigating the Developer Options.
Likewise, the Nexus 6 device must be rooted and the TWRP recovery must be installed. Before getting too excited, make sure also that the device has more than 70% of charge.
The installation can now start with connecting the Nexus 6 to the the PC to transfer the downloaded files. Afterwhich, disconnect the device and reboot it into recovery mode. Users can do this by pressing then holding Volume Up, Home, and Power buttons simultaneously.
Users then can start data wipe operations by going to data or factory reset and confirm the operation. Make sure that the cache partition and the dalvik cache are also wiped up.
Afterwhich, users can proceed to the ROM installation process and once it is completed, repeat the aforementioned steps for the installation of the GApps package. Once all of this is done, navigate to the main recovery menu and reboot the system.
