China's Robot Police Officer Has Now Started Patrolling; Can Recognize Faces
It may not be anywhere close to RoboCop, but it will definitely come when it senses trouble. Several online news has confirmed that China's new robot police officers have already started patrolling streets.
The E-Patrol Robot Sheriff is now operational and is able to track down and follow potential criminals or any suspicious people via facial recognition, according to Mashable. Aside from fighting crime, the robot officer is also capable of monitoring the quality of air and temperature and is also programmed to be able to track any potential criminal activity and even other life-threatening activities such as safety hazards and potential fires.
The 1.6-meter tall robot is also able to move on its own using a programmed system of cameras. The robot is currently stationed and patrolling at the Zhengzhou East Railway Station in Henan, where it is also able to identify all the staff at the station by means of their work passes.
According to Yahoo! News, China's newest robot also follows with the debut of a similar Dalek-type robot called the AnBot, another Chinese-developed bot that was released last year, and is currently stationed at the Shenzhen International Airport. However, it is not yet clear whether AnBot's bigger, sleeker cousin is armed like the AnBot is, though.
The AnBot has an electrically charged riot control tool (or taser for short) and will use it whenever it senses any potential danger within its area. The all-new E-Patrol Robot Sheriff has already made its first ever hazard when it found a small fire on its very first day, which published a first-hand account of police officers who was also working with the Robot Cop at that time.
An officer even wrote on the report, Thankfully, the robot's air monitoring and humidity monitoring functions helped us, if not we'd have a huge problem on our hands right now.
