NBA News: League Plans To 'Reset' & 'Change' Uncompetitive All-Star Game Next Year
The recently concluded 2017 NBA All-Star Game was the highest-scoring affair in the event's history, with the Western and Eastern Conference squads combining for a mind-blowing 374 points. The points combined broke the previous record of 369 total points set in just last year, 2016, which also broke the record of 321 points that was set 2015, which broke the record of 318 points set in 2014.
According to Yahoo! Sports, the NBA is currently in the midst of an unprecedented offensive explosion as offensive-minded teams like the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets are pushing the boundaries of pace and scoring efficiency. Nowhere has the leagues offensive-minded transition been on clearer display than in the annual All-Star Game, where the combination of highlight-seeking and defensive- lacking exhibition affair plunked two-thirds of the way through the NBA's 82-game season, which has led to skyrocketing point totals - and a clearly plummeting level of competition.
For a lot of fans, that has made the event a lot more of a chore to sit through than a showcase to celebrate. After this year's game, coaches and players alike have also seemed more interested than usual in lamenting the uncompetitive nature of the annual exhibition game.
According to WorldNews30, such complaints have a long, rich history, but this time around, the sentiments might actually prompt a coming change in the near future. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver even said Friday that Los Angeles Clippers point guard and National Basketball Players Association President Chris Paul has already reached out to him after this year's All-Star Game to express an interest in shaking things up, and Silver sounds interested in obliging to the idea.
While Silver and his associates consider the prospective tweaks, Warriors coach Steve Kerr, who was this years' Western Conference All-Star coach, echoed his post-All-Star Game assertion that creating a more competitive game is 'up to the players' With the NBA considering to change the landscape of the All-Star Game, we can all expect some significant changes happening in next year's event.
