AMLO’s Response to the Historic Femicide Protest
The President had reiterated his pledge to deal with all types of violence and crime in the world when he was asked by the media at his daily news conference whether all the upsurge of outrage would have a real effect on his policies or usher in a shift of focus.
On Tuesday, President Anderés Manuel López Obrador had mentioned that the latest protests in Mexico towards the growing killings of women did not alter the long run strategy that his administration had taken in tackling the issue.
López Obrador said on the his media conference on Tuesday that he has been continuously improving on his policy of resolving the roots of abuse but he will not be meeting with the requests of many of the feminist activists.
At approximately two days after an estimated 80,000 women demonstrated all across the City of Mexico as well as other cities all over the country wherein also a day after hundreds of female had a smaller protest by not attending school and work known as "A Day Without Women", President Lopez Obrador had spoken about the movement.
On Monday, a massive demonstration against all the killing of women and children took place by thousands of women in strike-as well as failing the successive governments to resolve a crisis in which about 10 women are killed each day.
The latest demonstrations were sparked by the violent killing of a seven-year-old girl in February and by more femicide. About 4,000 women were reported to be murdered last year, as per the official figures.
Within the Mexican women's appeals for action on femicides, a series of particularly egregious murders have generated a renewed urgency. However AMLO has repeatedly expressed concern regarding the current rising protests by women.
Recently López Obrador responds that his administration is much more specific in its strategy on gender equality, when he was asked if it will present a detailed plan on the increasing violence against women.
He looked disturbed by a femicide question during a press conference, in which, he claimed that it dominated his intention of raffling off the presidential plane.
The remarks were reminders of the past response by the president to the spiraling brutality against drug trafficking, in which he argued can be strengthened by a misdefined "moral renewal" strategy.
López Obrador acknowledged the detailed coverage of the protests and argued that the demonstrations he led during the time when he was in the opposition were not sufficiently reported.
At press conferences, López Obrador frequently rejects critical coverage and sometimes responds anomalously to news outlets and individual reports. He also argued that his rival politicians use them cynically to seek and damage his administration.
AMLO said that the women's movements were "very important" and said his administration embraced them. But the word "femicide" was not used by the President AMLO or gender problems were not listed, or specific safety concerns were not discussed.
In the pledge to reverse "neoliberal" initiatives, AMLO came to power, but rather has demonstrated that social problems such as abortion, fair marriage-and women's rights remain unchecked.
