Herd Immunity Slows COVID-19 Pandemic
When you talk about herd immunity, not all people know that this is a form of resistance from contagious diseases like Coronavirus Disease-19.
And since this COVID-19 seems like it will not slow down even a bit anytime soon, then a debate was raised regarding this form of immunity. It can decrease the population of the infected and also prevent other people from the virus.
For some people, they got immune because they were recovered from the virus by vaccination. So long as they are immune to the disease, however, for those people who got infected and recovered, they have a high chance that they will be immune to the virus in the future.
Herd immunity is an occurrence where a large group of people has been infected with a disease and recovered from it and become immune to the said virus.
And as of March 20, 2020, Friday, the said virus had infected more than 209,000 people all over the world and a total of 8,700 deaths as per the World Health Organization (WHO). And according to data gathered by Johns Hopkins University, there has been more than 86,000 people who have fully recovered from the virus.
And even though the infectious disease has traveled around the globe, 70% of the overall population has been infected and recovered. The chances of the outbreaks of the same condition in the future will be much more decreased because people are now immune to it.
This is what they called herd immunity. This is coming from a professor of emerging infectious disease at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
The real question is if this herd immunity is effective with the world's disease?
The fact that the Coronavirus has infected vast numbers of people, then a significant chance of herd immunity kicks in for about 5 to 70%. But because the health officials have ordered social distancing, including closing the schools, parks, tourist spots, shopping malls, and many more to prevent infecting other people, the herd immunity slows down.
Matthew Baylis said that in epidemiological point of view, the scheme is to reduce the number of people to be contacted so that they can slow down the number of people to be infected and the herd immunity will start sooner.
Matthew Baylis is a professor at the Institute of Infection, Veterinary, and Ecological Sciences located at Liverpool University.
This is what the professionals are thinking in order to drive people away from infecting viruses in the future. Though Coronavirus is not that fatal compared to previous illnesses and diseases the world had suffered, it is still very dangerous, considering that it had infected a large number of the population compared to SARS.
Although scientists are still looking for medicine to treat this kind of disease, they are also considering the wellness of the people for the future to come.
