Chicago Shootings, Crime, and Homocide: 30 People Shot Over the Weekend, Including 2 Police Officers
At least 30 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, including two police officers, and four victims have died.
The bloody weekend of violence in Chicago began on Friday and lasted until Sunday.
The first fatal shooting during the weekend occurred around 1:45 p.m. Friday afternoon on the 1900 block of West Howard Street in the Rogers Park neighborhood when an 18-year-old man was found with gunshot wounds to his torso and back, police said, NBC Chicago reported. The teen victim, who was identified as Alante Vallejo, was found by officials and transported to Presence St. Francis Hospital in Evanston where he was pronounced dead, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
A 20-year-old man was also injured in the shooting and suffered a wound to his foot. He was declared to be in good condition at Evanston Hospital.
Also on Friday, two Chicago Police officers were shot around 11:25 p.m. on the South Side. The officers were conducting a traffic stop in the 9300 block of South Wallace Street when a man sitting in the passenger seat, fired shots at them. The officers fired back, shooting the man multiple times and the woman who had been driving the vehicle once in the shoulder. There were no fatalities in the shooting and both officers suffered from minor injuries.
The most recent fatal shooting happened on the city's West Side Saturday night when 36-year-old Kennyone Pendelton was shot multiple times in the chest around 9:25 p.m. in the 4600 block of West Jackson Boulevard, according to authorities, CBS Chicago reported. Pendelton was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:36 p.m. Police said they believe that the shooting may have been gang-related.
About 1:30 a.m. Saturday, officers were called to the 5600 block of South Wabash Avenue where they found 18-year-old Brian Weekly and a 20-year-old man, both of whom had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, unresponsive in an alley. Weekly was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 20-year-old was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition.
About 7:20 p.m on Sunday night in Roseland, a 25-year-old man was shot in both legs in the 10200 block of South State Street, police said.
