The Godmother, a movie based on Colombian drug kingpin Griselda Blanco, will be produced by Jennifer Lopez and STXfilms.

The Godmother will be based on the life of Griselda Blanco, one of Colombia's many famous drug-cartel leaders. Emerging from a poor background in Colombia to become one of the world's largest drug dealers, the film shows Blanco's history.

Although she might not be as widely recognized as Pablo Escobar, Hollywood has gradually begun to make her as much an icon in the United States' mainstream culture. She was allegedly worth over $2 billion and was a key element in the Cocaine Cowboy Wars in Miami. In 2012, Blanco was murdered in Colombia.

Raised in Cartagena in 1943, Blanco relocated to Medellín with her mother at an early age and soon developed a reputation for robbery, petty theft, and even murder before establishing her cocaine dynasty from New York to Miami, and was associated with Cartel de Medellín throughout the 1970s.

Together with the traces of both Queen of the South and Narcos, it's no wonder to have seen her tale being edited elsewhere for a huge-screen adaptation. However, we hope these tales would begin to lose their cachet, considering how narrow a picture of Latin America they construct in the popular perception of the United States.

Catherine Zeta-Jones, who was hardly able to capture the sense of achievement of many other films of narcotic dramas, had recently played Blanco in a Lifetime film, named "Cocaine Godmother."

Jennifer Lopez as Blanco

Along with Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, and Julie Yorn, Lopez will be assuming the role of Blanco. It has also been assumed that Lopez will make her film adaptation with The Godmother, even though she has not quite yet pledged to the movie's greenlighting.

Back in 2016, when the project was first at HBO, Lopez had this to say: "I've been fascinated by the life of this corrupt and complicated woman for many years." The interest has never waned, and with Hustlers' success as well as her Superbowl concert, it seems as though Lopez is getting this project off the ground.

Her hot spin in Hustlers as Ramona might not have been enough to garner her an Oscar, but could a dark, dramatic film on one of the most popular drug dealers in Colombia do the trick? All the while, we will continue to look forward to seeing another of her forthcoming movies, Marry Me.

Lopez and the STXfilms previously partnered on the Second Act, a romantic comedy that received $72 million at the worldwide box office, as well as the forthcoming Hustlers, that released Sept. 13 following a world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival and co-stars Lopez, Cardi B, Keke Palmer, and Constance Wu.

Lopez has a few worthy titles to her name, she appeared in The Boy Next Door, Monster-in-Law, as well as the fan-favorite Wedding Planner among several others (we will intentionally forget about Gigli, for now).
