[Video] Schumer Makes a Hilarious 'Incited' Gaffe on Senate Speech, Social Media Erupts
Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer made an unfortunate gaffe while he was trying to say that former President Donald Trump incited insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6, and social media burst into laughs.
As Schumer was informing senators about the plans for Trump's impeachment trial, he fumbled in saying Trump "incited insurrection" and instead made a phallic blunder.
"Make no mistake, there will be a trial and when that trial ends, senators will have to decide if they believe Donald John Trump incited the erection... insurrection against the United States," he said.
Schumer took notice of his gaffe and visibly winced as he delivered the statement, Fox News reported. The two-minute-long statement was streamed live on C-SPAN on Friday, Snopes noted.
Schumer corrected himself from the unfortunate mistake, and his fellow lawmakers who were on the Senate floor seemed to brush off the mistake like it didn't happen.
But the damage was already done, and Schumer got a rise out of lawmakers, and everyone else on social media poked fun at the slip of the tongue, reported New York Post.
Last week, the House impeached Trump for "incitement of insurrection" for his alleged role in encouraging protesters who stormed the Capitol.Schumer said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi intends to deliver the impeachment articles to Senate by Jan. 25.
Social Media Quickly Moves on Schumer's Mistake
Twitter users were quick to rise to the occasion of a good laugh, and soon enough, the blunder was already trending on Twitter.
It was a quick turn of events that even some people on social media thought the video might have been manipulated, although from the embarrassed look on Schumer's face seemed to say otherwise.
Schumer's error just became one of many political memes that so far came out this year. It followed Senator Bernie Sanders' time at the center of the meme spotlight when a photo of him during President Joe Biden's inauguration circulated across the internet.
Some just had some laughs and had some dirty puns ready for the error, and others also noticed how Schumer had a very uncomfortable facial expression as he continued with his address.
"Oh, dear...the look on his face indicates he knows he said it," NBC editor Gavon Laessig said in a tweet.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg's Robert George joked "Well, it WAS an uprising!"
Others welcomed the blunder after a confusing year that was 2020 and said it was the "funniest political gaffe in American history."
Schumer's Gaffe Needed After 'Very Serious' Transition Week
Daily Mail noted that the gaffe came two weeks after Schumer had another brush with sexual innuendos related to the riot at the U.S. Capitol.
In a Manhattan press conference that Schumer attended on Jan. 12, a female heckler interrupted the event and shouted: "Seeing you hide under your desk, I actually got sexually excited over it."
Even though Schumer's error was hilarious but still unfortunate, it was also a well-received slip-up, given the serious context it was said in.
As Refinery 29 said, the error was something "we all needed after a very serious week."
With Biden moving into the White House this week, Trump's impeachment trial looming over him, and the aftermath of the Capitol trial, everyone just needed a good laugh.
It may have been embarrassing, but it also gave a moment of "levity" during the first weekend of Biden's presidency.
