2014 FIFA World Cup: Honduras vs. Ecuador, Predictions and Analysis; Who's Got the Advantage?
With France and Switzerland already ahead in the win column, Friday's World Cup match is a huge game for both Honduras and Ecuador as they square off against one another.
Neither team has been able to register a point so far, but that will end after Friday's matchup when the two teams play one another.
Which team has the edge? Let's take a look:
Honduras
The Honduras team suffered a pretty embarrassing loss to the French 3-0 in the opener. Noel Valladares is a good goalkeeper, but he didn't play up to expectations in that match. His next game will be against a much less powerful team. Carlo Costly leads the offensive unit up against Reinaldo Rueda and his team. Honduras is ranked No. 33, and they have never won a World Cup game, ever. This may be the best opportunity to give their fans a much needed victory.
Ecuador may not be a juggernaut, but the Honduras squad has many holes as well. The biggest gaps are apparent in the offensive side of the ball. Outside of Costly, this team lacks firepower. On defense, the team is young and mostly inexperienced. Maynor Figueroa is the most skilled defensive player and will be making his second World Cup appearance.
Ecuador
The Ecuadorian team ranks No. 26 overall and their head coach is Reinaldo Rueda. Rueda previously coached the Colombian team. Ecuador has won twice at the World Cup in 2002 and 2006. In the 2006, the team made it to the knockout round. Ecuador lost their first game to a heavily favored Switzerland team 2-1 in their opener but showed many viewers they can compete against the best teams.
Ecuador's biggest weakness is in the goal. Alexander Domínguez is playing in his first World Cup and many still remain skeptical. He did however play well in his opener against Switzerland. Ecuador's defense should be able to contain Honduras for most of the game and not allow too many shots. Walter Ayovi and Jorge Guagua make a good defensive combination. Ecuador has the superior middle field led by Édison Méndez, who has been playing in World Cups since 2002. Experienced middle field Antonio Valencia will also be out there on the wing. But similar to Honduras, Ecuador doesn't have a great offense either. Outside Felipe Caicedo, offensive pressure can be hard to come by.
Schedule, Date, Where and When to Watch
Honduras and Ecuador will play each other at 6 p.m. EST Friday on ESPN at the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba. The game can be watched on ESPN and seen online by downloading the WatchESPN app.
Prediction
Both teams have a below average offense, but Ecuador's defense played great against Switzerland. Honduras is going to struggle to clear the ball and get shots on goal. Ecuador wins 3-2.
