Joe Biden Pushes Gun Controls Agenda Following Sacramento Shooting
President Joe Biden on Sunday pushed for his gun controls agenda following the shooting incident in Sacramento the same day that killed at least six individuals.
Speaking about Sunday's tragedy in Sacramento, Biden seized the opportunity to promote his program that aims to curb the rising gun violence statistics in the country, per Fox News.
"We must do more than mourn; we must act," Biden said in a statement on Sunday night.
Biden also pointed out that the tragedy in Sacramento was the reason his administration has taken "historic executive action" in implementing his comprehensive gun crime reduction strategy.
The president also noted that the administration established gun trafficking strike forces in U.S. cities to intervene with community violence and hire more police officers from community policing.
Pres. Joe Biden then called on Congress to act on the gun violence that is taking place across the country.
The president urged Congress to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and repeal gun manufacturers' immunity from liability.
Biden also called on Congress to pass his budget proposal to give cities across the country additional funding to fund the police and crime prevention intervention strategies.
"These are just a few of the steps Congress urgently needs to take to save lives," Pres. Joe Biden underscored.
Pres. Joe Biden's Strategy in Curbing Gun Violence
President Joe Biden highlighted a comprehensive strategy for reducing gun violence during his State of The Union address in February.
A statement from the White House noted that $350 billion in the American Rescue Plan was made available for the cities, counties, and states, for them to use and invest in proven strategies of community violence intervention.
The said strategy mentioned by President Biden includes stemming the flow of firearms and giving support to local law enforcement by providing federal tools and resources to put more cops who will focus on the issue.
In addition, the strategy also involves investing in evidence-based community violence intervention, and even expanding summer programs, employment opportunities, and other services to make teenagers and young adults stay away from crime, per the White House statement.
However, not all officials are in favor of Pres. Joe Biden's plans.
Last week, lawmakers from Alabama moved to advance legislation that would prohibit their local officials from participating in the president's enforcement of gun control, Associated Press noted per U.S. News and World Report.
"The Second Amendment says the right to bear arms shall not be infringed upon, and this bill is about safeguarding our God-given rights to protect our families and homes," Senator Gerald Allen from Tuscaloosa said.
Biden Addresses Sacramento Shooting
On Sunday, President Joe Biden also commented on the shooting in Sacramento saying that that tragedy forever changed the families of the dead victims.
"Today, America once again mourns for another community devastated by gun violence... In a single act in Sacramento, six individuals were left dead and at least a dozen more injured," Biden said, per Fox News.
The president also thanked the first responders in Sacramento following the shooting.
Biden then noted that the victims of the Sacramento were not the only victim of gun violence in the country, adding that the government equally mourns for the victims and families who were not able to make it to the national headlines.
Six people were fatally shot and another 12 were reportedly injured in downtown Sacramento on Sunday morning. Fox News noted that no suspect was taken into custody in connection to the shooting.
