Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff have been married for almost eight years, with the two starting their relationship with a blind date in 2013.

Harris was the Attorney General of California at the time. According to People, the two were set up on a blind date by Harris' friend, Chrisette Hudlin.

Emhoff wrote in a message in 2020 for his wife's birthday that their relationship was a "love at first sight." He added that Harris has always been there for him and their family without any hesitation, no matter what.

Harris revealed in an interview with Jane Pauley of CBS News' Sunday Morning in January 2020 that she Googled Emhoff before meeting him.

Emhoff said in the same interview that he left a "ridiculous voicemail" to Harris before they went out, which the vice president has saved and plays back to him on their anniversary every year.

Harris recalled in her memoir that Emhoff emailed her with a list of his available dates for the next couple of months after their first date and told her that he wanted to "make this work." And the vice president noted that since then, they have "been making it work."

The two had decided to get married in 2014, less than a year after their first date. Doug Emhoff revealed to Marie Claire that he proposed to Kamala Harris "in the middle of a decidedly unromantic conversation," saying she was choosing between chicken or shrimp pad thai.

Kamala Harris Relationship Before Meeting Doug Emhoff

According to Reuters, Kamala Harris had a relationship with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown between 1994 and 1995.

The two were first linked when Harris was just starting her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. The vice president was 29 at the time, and Brown was 60.

Brown was legally married at the time. However, he claimed that he had been separated from his wife, Blanche Brown, since 1981.

The relationship of Harris and Brown was not a secret. They made public appearances as a couple. Harris and Brown reportedly separated in 1995.

In January 2019, Brown published a short op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle with the headline: "Sure, I dated Kamala Harris. So what?"

The former San Francisco mayor said he had received a lot of calls from the national media asking about his relationship with Harris after reports came out that she was going to run for president.

"Most of them, I have not returned. Yes, we dated. It was more than 20 years ago," Brown wrote.

So the claim that the vice president "had an affair with a married man" is technically true. According to Daily Mail, Kamala Harris has struggled to avoid her association with Brown, whom she has described as "an albatross hanging around my neck."

Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff Married Life

Doug Emhoff has shown support to Kamala Harris ever since they became a couple, especially during his wife's campaign for vice president.

According to Oprah Daily, Emhoff, the first Jewish spouse of a U.S. vice president, is a supportive spouse. He immediately tweeted that he was so proud of his wife, with a picture of him embracing her upon hearing the news of Harris' win.

Emhoff also described himself in his Twitter bio as a "devoted dad" and "proud husband of @KamalaHarris." He announced in November 2020 that he would leave his job at a law firm to engage in his duties as the country's first-ever second gentleman.

And that's not his only new job. In January 2021, Emhoff joined the faculty at Georgetown University Law Center, where he was teaching a credit course on entertainment law disputes.

As Harris' husband, Emhoff told Marie Claire that his role was "to be there for her, to love her, to have her back, to talk it through, to help her." He also told GQ that dipping his toe into Harris' world has brought them "even closer together."

And the feeling is mutual, as Harris earlier told Now This that he loves his husband, who is funny, kind, and patient.

"He loves my cooking. He's just a really great guy," the vice president added.

The second gentleman has two kids with his ex-wife, Kerstin Emhoff. Emhoff's children affectionately call their stepmother "Momala."

In an Elle article, Kamala Harris said that she and Kerstin were "dear friends." The vice president noted that her family was her "endless source of love and pure joy."

"I can say one thing with certainty, my heart wouldn't be whole, nor my life full, without them," Harris noted.
