U.S. intelligence has been helping Ukraine to target and kill many of Russia's generals who have died in action in the Russia-Ukraine war, senior American officials say.

Ukrainian officials noted that they have killed around 12 generals on the front lines. The New York Times reported that the figure has "astonished" military analysts.

The help to target Russian generals is part of a classified effort from U.S. President Joe Biden's administration through providing "real-time battlefield intelligence."

U.S. intelligence also provides Ukraine with expected movements of the Russian troop, as well as assessments of Moscow's "secret battle plan" for the fighting in the Donbas region. Officials did not specify how many Russian generals have been killed as a result of U.S. assistance.

The United States hands out the location and other details about the Russian military's mobile headquarters. The geographic information provided by the United States is being supplemented by Ukraine's own intelligence, covering intercepted communications that alert the Ukrainian military to the presence of senior Russian officers.

The intelligence is also supported by heavier weapons and tens of billions of aid given by the U.S. government to Ukraine.

Russia has tried to regroup since failing to advance on Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, in the early part of the war. Russian troops are now more focused on eastern Ukraine.

U.S. Intelligence on Russia-Ukraine War

Officials revealed that U.S. intelligence has played a crucial role in Ukraine's successful campaign so far.

One unnamed U.S. official noted that they leaned "pretty heavily forward" when it comes to sharing both strategic and actionable intelligence with Ukraine, according to a Daily Mail report. The unnamed official added that it has been "impactful" at a tactical and strategic level.

Russian outlet MediaZona reported that 317 officials of junior lieutenant rank and above have been killed in Russia's invasion in just over two months of fighting. A third of casualties also came from senior grades, including a line of generals and deputy commanders of Russia's Black Sea fleet.

On April 13, Russia admitted that Col. Mikhail Nagamov had been killed in action, being reportedly the 35th colonel to be killed in the war.

A former U.S. official noted that much of the shared information was commercial satellite images, but also a where certain types of Russian units are active.

Between 15,000 and 22,000 Russian troops have been killed in combat by Ukraine's army.

Russia-Ukraine War

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his nightly address on Sunday that Russia's latest strikes involve grain warehouses and residential neighborhoods.

Zelenskyy said that the latest attacks prove that the war against Ukraine is "a war of extermination for the Russian army," according to The Guardian report.

Pope Francis described the war in Ukraine as a "macabre regression of humanity." He added that the situation makes him "suffer and cry." He offered his thoughts to Mariupol, which he said is being "barbarously bombarded and destroyed."

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is also the next highest-ranking U.S. official to visit Ukraine.

Zelenskyy presented Pelosi with the order of the Princess of Olga medal.
