Stephanie Beatriz: Get to Know the Argentine-American Actress Who Gave Voice to Mirabel Madrigal of 'Encanto'
Actress Stephanie Beatriz was born in Argentina to a Colombian father and a Bolivian mother. Most of her acting years were spent in a theater playing Juliet in "Romeo and Juliet" with TheatreWorks USA.
Beatriz first appeared on television in 2009 for her debut role in an episode titled "The Life" from TNT's police drama "The Closer," according to The Famous People.
Beatriz also appeared in ABC's mockumentary family sitcom "Modern Family," being cast to play the recurring role of Sonia Ramirez, the sister of Gloria Pritchett, played by Sofia Vergara.
The Latina actress also played small parts in NBC's crime-drama "Southland," Disney Channel's sitcom "Jessie," and HBO's comedy series "Hello Ladies."
It was not until she got the part of Rosa Diaz in the series "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" that she had her career break. At the time, she reportedly had $200 in the bank.
"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" was first produced by Fox in Los Angeles as a single-camera comedy and narrates the story of NYPD detective Jake Peralta played by Andy Samberg.
Stephanie Beatriz in 'Encanto'
Aside from her breakout role Rosa Diaz, Stephanie Beatriz was also known for giving voice to Mirabel Madrigal of "Encanto."
She starred in the 2021 Disney animated as the lead character, Mirabel Madrigal. Mirabel is a 15-year-old girl trying to find her purpose in her family after discovering that she is the only one without a supernatural gift.
Beatriz revealed during an interview that she gave birth the day after the final recording of "Waiting on a Miracle." She noted that she did not want to tell anybody at Disney that she was having contractions as she did not want anyone to freak out, Business Insider reported.
Beatriz said she was hoping that she would finish the song before the baby came out. Byron Howard, director of "Encanto," noted that he had no idea that Beatriz's baby was coming at that time. "Encanto" was nominated for three awards at the Academy Awards.
Stephanie Beatriz on 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine'
Stephanie Beatriz revealed in her Entertainment Weekly interview that she was afraid she would be fired from "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" while shooting the pilot because she is Latina.
Beatriz said that either she or Melissa Fumero was going to be fired. She added that there was no way "they're going to keep both of us."
The Rosa Diaz of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" noted that there was a time when one "would do that with actors of color," adding that she really did think that way.
Aside from "Encanto," Beatriz also voiced Elizabeth in the animated web series "WIZARD" in 2016 and Sheriff Luke/Captain Banjo in the 2017 series "Danger & Eggs."
Stephanie Beatriz also gave voice to General Sweet Mayhem in 2019 in "The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part."
