Paraguay's former president, Fernando Lugo, was reportedly in an induced coma on Wednesday after suffering from a stroke.

Party officials confirmed the news on Wednesday, claiming that Lugo is in "stable condition" following his recent health scare, according to Reuters.

"He is stable now and the primary lesion we see is a lesion that allows us to be a little bit optimistic," Dr. Jorge Querey underscored.

Doctors emphasized that there was no evidence of significant lesions in the aftermath of Lugo's stroke. However, the medical experts warned that it was too early to tell the extent of damage, given his previous health condition.

Query said that Lugo suffered a "relatively small" injury after the stroke. However, the doctor noted that the injury can shrink or grow larger, admitting that they still do not know what will play out.

The former president of Paraguay was transferred to a different hospital for further tests. He will remain in a medically induced coma for at least 12 to 24 hours.

Query also noted that Lugo will undergo an MRI exam to see the extent of damage from the stroke.

According to a Guasu Front Senator, Lugo presented health symptoms over the weekend when he attended President Gustavo Petro's inauguration in Colombia, per teleSUR English.

Reports then noted that earlier in the day, the former president ignored minor symptoms possibly related to stroke.

Query then mentioned that Paraguay's former president had convulsions while he was inside his Senate Office. The doctor underscored that what Lugo experienced was called an "epileptic attack."

Reports note that Lugo was brought to a hospital in Asuncion, and he suffered from a cerebrovascular accident.

Paraguay's Ex-Pres. Fernando Lugo Other Health Scare

It was not the first time that Lugo experienced an issue with his health.

In 2010, Lugo, who was still Paraguay's president during that time, was diagnosed with a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of cancer. The said disease was discovered in Lugo's body in its early stages.

He received treatment for his lymphoma in Brazil. Doctors confirmed that Lugo recovered from the disease, as they noted that the ex-president's lymphoma was in complete remission.

Lugo is also known to take drugs for his hypertension and to improve his blood circulation.

Fernando Lugo, who is now a Senator of Paraguay, is one of the country's historical leaders of the left-wing Gusau Front coalition.

Before becoming Paraguay's president, Lugo was a Roman Catholic priest who serves as a bishop from the Diocese of San Pedro from 1994 to 2005.

Lugo stepped down from serving the Roman Catholic church when he became active in politics and was eventually sworn in as president in 2008.

Lugo was removed as president of Paraguay through an impeachment process in 2012, but he was elected as a senator a year after.
