Former U.S. President Donald Trump wants Sen. Mitch McConnell out of his GOP leadership position.

Deadline reported that Trump wrote in a statement that McConnell is not an opposition leader but a "pawn for the Democrats to get whatever they want." He added that the Senate Minority leader is afraid of the Democrats and "will not do what has to be done."

Trump said that a new GOP leader in the Senate should be chosen "immediately."

Trump's lambasting of McConnell comes after the GOP leader denounced the former president's involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot.

Trump had also attacked McConnell's wife of 29 years, Elaine Chao, as well as her family's ties to China. Chao's family business has a shipping company in China.

Chao's background has been known ever since her four-year stint as secretary of transportation under Trump. The former president even appointed her.

The fight between two Republican figures continues, even involving McConnell's wife in the rebuttals.

Trump called Chao "crazy wife" and "Coco" in his Wednesday message, according to a The Hill report.

The former president had also urged Republicans to replace McConnell as the new Senate leader to ramp up the party's chances of taking the Congress in 2022. Trump noted that he believes the GOP will do very well, adding that they need good leadership and that McConnell "has not done a great job."

McConnell has witnessed what happened during the January Capitol riot last year, noting in February that the incident was a "violent insurrection" aimed to prevent the peaceful transfer of power after a legitimate certified election.

Trump then retorted back in a statement noted in an NPR report, saying that McConnell does not speak for the Republican party and does not "represent the views" of the huge majority of the party's voters.

The former president added that McConnell did nothing to fight for his constituents and "stop the most fraudulent election in American history."

January 6 Capitol Riot

Trump had told the crowd that they would not save the Republican Party "if you don't get tougher," then urging them to march to the U.S. Capitol.

He then waited for hours before telling the crowd to disperse after the rally had turned into a riot.

McConnell said at one point that Trump's actions after the riot "were a disgraceful dereliction of duty," according to a CNN analysis.

The Senate Minority leader went on to say that Trump was "practically and morally responsible" during the events of that day. He added that the Senate's decision does not condone anything that happened on or before January 6 last year.

The former president then referred to some of those involved in the Capitol riot as "patriots." He added that he would consider pardoning those people if he was to be elected president again.

Currently, four major investigations are surrounding the former president.
