However, the country is also famous for its tourist attractions and natural resources, such as minerals, coffee, tropical fruit, and sugar cane.
4 Popular Honduras Tourist Spots
According to Honduras Travel, the Central American nation is famed for its Mayan ruins and national parks. Almost 40% of its national park territories, which is almost the size of the entire country of Costa Rica, are protected by law. Most of these national parks are found around and near the Caribbean Coasts and the Bay Islands.
Pico Bonito National Park
Honduras' Pico Bonito National Park is considered a hidden paradise located in La Ceiba, a Caribbean coastal town in the northern region of Honduras. The national park is home to the Cangrejal River, which was declared the eighth of the 30 Wonders of Honduras in 2011.
It has grade II, III, and IV rapids down the steep slope between two national parks. Pico Bonito is deemed one of the best parks for outdoor activities in Honduras, with outdoor tours including kayaking or whitewater rafting.
Copan Ruins
The Mayan ruins are located in western Honduras in the department of Copan, just 14 kilometers from the El Florida border with Guatemala. According to Visit Centro America, Copan Ruins have been famous for its Mayan ruins, which UNESCO declared as Archaeological World Heritage Site in 1980.
It is even determined to be the Paris of the Mayan world in Central America. Copan Ruins is full of history and culture, with many natural attractions such as bird parks and hot springs. The Mayan ruin is considered one of Honduras' most important cultural destinations.
Lake Yojoa
Lake Yojoa is the nation's largest inland lake and is volcanic in origin. According to Britannica, tourists visit the area for its popular tourist resort, with fishing and duck shooting trips on the lake. The lake was created out of a volcanic explosion in Honduras. Since then, it has become a point of interest for bird lovers, with the lake basin having the greatest diversity of birds in Honduras.
The basin also contains three main types of forests, with marshes and water mirrors associated with the largest lake in Honduras. Lake Yojoa caters to different ecotourism activities, such as boat rides and water sports like regattas, jet skiing, kayaking, and fishing.
Comayagua
Comayagua is home to several historical sites, architectural landmarks, churches, and a cathedral. The church of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception can be found in the area, and residents hold patron fairs in honor of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception.
Comayagua also has the Museum of Religious Art, where the importance of the church in colonial religious art is being showcased. The art pieces include sculptures, robes embroidered in gold threats, and multiple jewels of the saints.
