Nebraska Man Dies After Being Shot by Omaha Police
A 23-year-old Nebraska man was shot and killed by a police officer.
The Omaha Police Department said that at 3 a.m. Sunday, officers were called to the area of 30th and Marcy Street because shots had been fired, according to 1011 Now.
When they arrived at the scene, the officers found the man sitting in a parked SUV.
According to Omaha police, the man sitting in the driver seat was identified as Jeramyah Wilson.
The report says that an officer saw a gun when he walked up to the SUV to approach Wilson.
The police say that they hid and told Wilson several times over the next six minutes to put down his gun. The OPD says that officers tried to help Wilson to calm him.
However, instead of putting the gun down, Wilson allegedly threatened the officers several times.
The Shooting Incident According to a Witness
KETV went to where the incident occurred and talked to the two men living next door.
Ryan Hensley claims to have heard everything, and he lives next door.
"You're completely unaware of when it can happen or how it can happen, just so sad that it did happen," said Ryan Hensley.
Police say Wilson was in an SUV with a gun when they got there.
Wilson yelled threats at them and quickly moved to the car's passenger side, where a police officer was hiding.
"It wasn't too much longer. After that, I heard someone yell, 'no, no, no, stop, stop, don't do it.' And then it was just like, 'baa, baa, baa, baa, baa!,'" said Hensley.
The Nebraska man was then taken to the hospital, where he eventually passed away after two police officers opened fire. Omaha police allegedly said they have a history with the man.
"A similar situation that he's talked about not necessarily being in this situation but talking about suicidal ideations of officers being involved in that," said Lt. Neal Bonacci.
An affidavit dated September 2019 states that Wilson pointed a "handgun" at the police. However, it was later found that he was holding a black airsoft gun.
He was arrested on two counts of terroristic threats.
Another witness who lives next to where the shooting happened said he frequently saw Wilson around the neighborhood and was startled by what happened. He extended his condolences to the Nebraska man's family.
"Prayers go out to them. It sucks to lose a loved one, especially so young. You know, he had a whole life ahead of him," said Marcus File.
Omaha Police say they will have more to say on Tuesday after talking to the officers involved.
The Two Omaha Police Are Placed on Administrative Leave
The two Omaha police officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave.
According to WOWT, the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office and the Nebraska State Patrol will be helping with the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, no police officers were harmed during the shooting incident.
