With the 2014 World Cup now entering the knockout round, just 16 teams remain. Brazil and Chile will be playing each other for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals. Let's compare these two countries on and off the field:
Soccer history
Brazil and Chile have played each other three times in the World Cup, all in the knockout round stage. In 1962, Chile hosted the World Cup and advanced to the semifinals after beating the Soviet Union. Unfortunately for Chile fans, Brazil defeated Chile 4-2 in the next round. In 1998 and 2010, Brazil defeated Chile in the opening knockout game.

Landmarks
If you're a beach person or a fan of wildlife. then you've struck gold with both of these countries. Both Brazil and Chile offer fantastic sightseeing attractions. Brazil's most famous landmark is the 125-foot statue of Jesus in Rio de Janeiro. It is one of the world's largest statues of Jesus. Outside of historic monuments, Brazil is famous worldwide for its beaches and mountains, such as Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Copacabana beach.
Chile's beaches and wildlife are just as impressive. Valparaiso is a colorful coastal city rich in culture. One of the world's most historic landmarks is the Moai on Chile's Easter Island. The Moai are ancient rock carved sculptures that are hundreds of years old. And be careful where you step: Chile has a lot of volcanoes.
Chile is also home to the Gran Torre Santiago skyscraper, the tallest building in South America.
Food
These two countries share many food characteristics, which comes as no surprise, considering they're separated by fewer than 1,000 miles. One of the biggest differences between these countries and America is the spices. Brazil's most popular foods include pineapple, shrimp and crab legs. Chile is well-known for meats, olives and onions. Brazil's national beverage is coffee; Chile's is wine. Both countries have many things in common with Spain, from where many immigrants brought food for years.
Celebrities
Brazil and Chile have made their presences well-known on the big screen. One of the most famous Brazilian actresses is Morena Baccarin, who has been nominated for numerous awards. Remember the movie "300"? The main villain, Xerxes, was played by Rodrigo Santoro, who has done many voice-overs. One of the most well-known Chilean celebrities in America is Nicole Polizzi, better known as Snooki. Pedro Pascal is a very popular Chilean actor who has appeared in multiple movies and TV shows.
Economy
Many Americans are surprised to learn that unemployment in Brazil and Chile is less than 7 percent. Many Brazilian politicians hope this World Cup will boost the national economy. Brazil's main export partners include China, America and Argentina, and the biggest exported goods are shoes, chemicals and textiles. Chile's biggest export destinations are China, the U.S. and Japan. The largest exported goods are fish, fruit and copper.
