In what might have been one of the most excruciatingly painful experiences in his life, a Brazilian politician had a pair of scissors taken out from his abdomen that was left inside following surgery to remove a tumor from his intestine.

According to the Daily Mail, Cleyton Zanatta, a city councilman for Nova Santa Helena municipality in Mato Grosso state, underwent intestinal surgery at Colíder Regional Hospital on January 20.

However, the surgeon who operated on him made a huge error when he forgot his surgical scissors inside the Brazilian politician's body. Zanatta had another surgery to remove the scissors from his first surgery on January 28.

That means that he had the scissors inside him for a little over a week. Reports noted that after the pair of scissors was removed, Zanatta was discharged two days later.

How the Pair of Scissors Was Discovered Inside the Brazilian Politician's Body

Cleyton Zanatta reportedly still feels pain in his stomach a few days after being discharged and sent home from his first operation. The 46-year-old Brazilian politician visited a clinic on January 26 and had a CT scan. There, it was discovered that the pair of scissors was left inside his stomach.

According to the New York Post, shortly after the object was found inside his body, the Brazilian Social Democracy Party member returned to the same hospital where the bungled operation first happened.

The surgeon reportedly left the scissors in the abdominal area, forgot to take them out, and immediately sewed him up. Zanatta is reportedly in stable condition after the large pair of scissors was removed from his intestines.

The only thing the Brazilian politician recently complained about was headaches. Zanatta told Brazilian news outlet G1 that his doctor said he was still experiencing a lot of headaches "because I received two anesthesias in less than a week."

"But I'm already at home, thank God," he added.

Brazilian Politician Is Not Sure About Pressing Charges Against the Hospital

Usually, medical incidents like these would end up in lawsuits against the doctors and the hospital for medical malpractice. However, Cleyton Zanatta does not seem to want to press charges at the moment.

According to local news outlet Mundo ao Minuto, the Brazilian politician told G1 that he was already thankful that the tumor was removed, "which was positive."

"I'm going to have to go through the doctor and have a follow-up... At the moment, I don't think about that. But we'll see what happens from now on," Zanatta noted.

While the Brazilian politician is still not sure if he will be seeking legal action against Colíder Regional Hospital and its surgeon, the incident has caught the attention of the state's Department of Health Department, which currently investigates the medical facility as to why the surgical instrument was left in Zanatta's body.
