Former President Donald Trump remained the 2024 Republican presidential frontrunner and defeated Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in a hypothetical matchup, according to a new national poll.

Based on the poll from Quinnipiac University released on Wednesday, the former president gets 47% support among Republicans and GOP leaning independents, while DeSantis was second with 33%.

The Republican respondents were given a list of 15 actual or possible presidential candidates from which to choose.

However, the same poll also showed that a majority of Americans also want Trump to be disqualified from running again if criminal charges are filed against him.

The poll revealed that should Trump be indicted in ongoing local and federal probes, 57% of respondents believe he should be disqualified from running in the 2024 presidential elections. Only 38% said he should not be disqualified.

However, Fox News reported a big partisan divide, with 88% of Democrats and 55% of independents saying Trump should be disqualified, while three-quarters of Republicans believe he should still be able to run even if criminal charges have been set against him.

Poll Says Voters Think Donald Trump Has a Negative Impact on the Republican Party

To poll also found that over half of registered voters think Donald Trump has had a mainly negative impact on the Republican party.

Around 58% of voters think he has had a negative impact on the GOP, while about 36% think he has had a positive impact.

The poll also showed that 7 in 10 Republican voters, or 72%, believe Trump has had a mainly positive impact on their party.

Around 6 in 10 voters, or 60%, do not consider themselves supporters of Trump's MAGA movement, but 36% do. Nearly 8 in 10 Republican voters, or 79%, consider themselves MAGA Republicans, but 18% do not.

Voters were also asked about the honesty of the potential presidential candidates, and 41% think President Joe Biden is honest, while 54% say he is not. For Ron DeSantis, 41% say he is honest, while 40% say he is not. Around 29% say Donald Trump is honest, while 65% say he is not.

In a hypothetical general election matchup, the presidential race is neck and neck, with Biden receiving 48% and Trump getting 46% among registered voters.

The race is also very close between Biden and DeSantis, with DeSantis receiving 48% and Biden receiving 46% among registered voters.

Voters also found Biden the most favorable with 37%, followed by Trump and DeSantis at 36% each. DeSantis had a low unfavourability rating at 39%, but Trump gets the lowest rating at 58%.

The Quinnipiac University poll was conducted from March 23 to 27, with 1,788 adults nationwide surveyed. The overall sampling error of the poll is plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.

Another Poll Shows Majority of Americans Do Not Want Donald Trump to be President Again

A different poll by NPR/Marist has shown that Donald Trump, while loved by his base, is less popular among other Americans.

The new poll showed that only 38% of national adults want Trump to be president again, while a big 61% majority do not want him back to the White House.

Of that minority, 76% of Republicans, 34% of independents, and 11% of Democrats say they want Trump back as president. From the majority, 89% of Democrats, 64% of independents, and 21% of Republicans do not want Trump to be president again.

Fox News also reported that only 39% of Americans have a favorable opinion of Trump.
