Diego Maradona's death in 2020 brought Argentina to a standstill. However, there may be foul play involved in the soccer legend's death. Eight medical professionals who used to be part of his medical team are to stand on trial over the World Cup winner's death.

According to ESPN, the eight medical professionals are accused of "simple homicide with wanton disregard" and could face around 8-25 years in prison if found guilty of foul play in the death of Argentina's biggest soccer icon.

Maradona was 60 when he died on November 25, 2020, due to heart failure. He had already undergone brain surgery earlier that month, and authorities suspect that his medical team may have not done enough to save the former Argentina captain and coach when he was having heart failure.

A report from a medical board concluded that the soccer great was not given adequate treatment and would have still been alive if he had been properly hospitalized. That same report noted that Maradona was in agony for more than 12 hours. The circumstances have led prosecutors to believe that this was a case of homicide through negligence.

Who Are the People Accused of Being Involved in Diego Maradona's Death?

The people being accused of homicide by negligence were all tasked with Maradona's care, as the soccer legend was dealing with a mountain of health issues. Two of them, neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, are accused of failing in their care for Maradona.

The Associated Press also noted that Maradona's psychologist, Carlos Diaz, as well as medical team members and doctors Nancy Forlini and Pedro Di Spagna, nursing coordinator Mariano Perroni, and nurses Ricardo Almiron and Dahiana Madrid, are among those who will stand on trial for the athlete's death.

One of the judges overseeing the case at the San Isidro appeals court, Carlos Fabian Blanco, stated that prosecutors have brought enough evidence to have the eight members of Maradona's medical team stand in trial.

An autopsy of Maradona revealed that he died in his sleep of acute pulmonary edema, a buildup of fluid in the lungs, because of congestive heart failure. The former Argentina national team coach had years of drug and alcohol abuse, which resulted in an enlarged heart, which weighed almost twice as much as a normal heart.

England's Football Association Rips Up Fan's Ticket Over Offensive Flag Against Diego Maradona

While Diego Maradona is a hero in Argentina, he is often seen as a villain in England, thanks to the infamous "Hand of God" incident during the 1986 World Cup.

One England fan took this hatred of Maradona further as he placed the words "Diego's in a box" on all four quadrants of the English flag, known as St. George's Cross. Now, England's Football Association (FA) has ripped up that fan's tickets for that offensive flag, according to the Daily Mail.

The fan reportedly took the offensive flag mocking Maradona to a match in Italy where Maradona made a name for himself and won the UEFA Champions League for Napoli. Much like in Argentina, Maradona is also beloved in Italy as he played in much of his professional career in that country.
