Donald Trump Rape Trial: Final Arguments Presented Before Jury in E. Jean Carroll Lawsuit Vs. Former President
Former President Donald Trump's rape trial has now concluded as the attorneys for both sides have presented their closing arguments, with E. Jean Carroll's lawyer accusing Trump of destroying the writer's reputation.
Roberta Kaplan, who represents the former Elle Magazine writer accusing the former president of raping her, reminded the jury that nobody is above the law, not even a former president like Donald Trump. However, Trump's attorneys argued that Carroll brought "false claims."
The BBC noted that the 9-member jury will begin their deliberations on Tuesday morning. They have heard arguments from both sides over the course of two weeks inside a Manhattan federal court.
Carroll claims that Trump raped her in the lingerie department of a Bergdorf Goodman department store in 1995 or 1996 and has kept quiet about it for over two decades until she released her memoir when Trump was still president.
The former president has denied the allegation, but the columnist's attorneys have presented evidence that Trump's sexual advancements to other women show a clear pattern of behavior.
E. Jean Carroll Attorney Uses Donald Trump's Own Words Against Him
In her closing argument, Carroll's attorney Roberta Kaplan, not related to US District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who oversees this case, stated, "In a very real sense, Donald Trump is a witness against himself." She then used the words uttered by the former president against himself.
The Caroll lawyer pointed out that when Trump stated that her client was not his "type," he might have admitted that "she wasn't attractive enough for me to sexually assault."
The lawyer then talked about the incident where Trump mistook a photograph of Carroll for his second wife, Marla Maples. She said that because Trump married Maples, who Kaplan said "was exactly his type," it would discredit Trump's "Not my Type" argument.
Attorney Kaplan also pointed to the infamous Access Hollywood tape, also known as the "Grab her by the p*ssy" tape, to point to Trump's repeated behavior of sexual harassment. In that tape, Trump infamously bragged that he would usually kiss and grope women without their consent because he was famous.
"What is Donald Trump doing here? Telling you in his own words how he treats women," said the attorney. She added, "In order to win Trump needs you to believe that not only E Jean Carroll is lying but all three women perjured themselves in this case,"
Meanwhile, Trump attorney Joe Tacopina claimed that Carroll colluded with two other Trump accusers to fabricate stories about the former president.
Donald Trump Did Not Show Up During His Own Rape Trial Despite Vowing to Confront E. Jean Carroll
When Trump was in Ireland, he told reporters that he would be flying back to New York and confront accuser E, Jean Carroll. However, his very own attorney, Joe Tacopina, shut this down when he confirmed that despite saying this to reporters, Trump would still not be showing up in court to testify.
According to Reuters, Tacopina told Judge Kaplan that his client has already waived his right to testify in the trial, though the judge extended a deadline for the former president to testify until Sunday, which Trump did not meet. As the closing arguments were made, he did not appear once in his rape trial.
