After over a decade of evading the police, suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann is now in police custody, with investigators now raiding his home and storage units in search of more evidence against the New York architect.

According to CBS News, police confiscated an entire arsenal of nearly 300 guns in their raid. They also confiscated framed pictures and even a child-like doll from his home in Massapequa Park in Long Island, New York.

Between 200-300 firearms were found in the home's basement, locked behind a metal door in a walled-off vault. The weapons included pistols, revolvers, and semi-automatic rifles, although authorities noted that Heuermann was an avid hunter. Of the hundreds of guns, only 92 were registered, with police admitting that the weapons cache was more than what they expected.

The Gilgo Beach serial killer remained elusive for well over a decade, and this has made many residents in Long Island terrified. As police raided the architect's home, many residents spoke out and said that the house should be razed and bulldozed.

In their raid, police also searched Heuermann's nearby storage unit, which authorities say is connected to the case. There, the suspected serial killer kept unspecified items possibly related to the case.

Suspected Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Rex Heuermann Placed on Suicide Watch

Aside from the raid on Rex Heuermann's properties, Suffolk County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Vicki DiStefano confirmed that they have placed him on suicide watch following his arrest last week.

This decision was not made by the sheriff's office but by the Suffolk County jail medical staff, which noted that suicide is not uncommon in cases like Heuermann's, according to CNN.

Currently, investigators have been dealing with a "flood" of new evidence as more and more have been found. Police admitted, "we have a flood of information and a flood of evidence coming in, and it's going to take us a while to sort of go through all of that."

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney spoke with CNN and revealed that the final victim, Amber Costello, was seen with a man who matched Heuermann's description. He added that they have phone evidence and also DNA evidence to back it up.

The DA noted that Heuermann's DNA, as well as his wife's, were found on two bodies.

The Long Island jailkeepers who kept watch on the suspected serial killer recently spoke with the New York Post and admitted that Heuermann allegedly had only one question for them: "Is it in the news?"

The suspect wanting to hear about himself on the news came after a state police official said an investigator assigned to the cold cases in February 2022 identified Heuermann as the suspect in just one month.

He is currently the main suspect in the deaths of three women whose bodies were found just miles from one another in Gilgo Beach, Long Island. He is also suspected of killing a fourth woman but remains a person of interest for now.

There were 11 bodies found on the beach, and police are still investigating if all their deaths are connected.
