The US House of Representatives is set to initiate a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, as announced by the most senior Republican in the House, Kevin McCarthy, according to BBC.

McCarthy stated that the inquiry will center on "allegations of abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption" involving President Biden.

Republicans have been investigating the president's actions since they gained control of the House in January.

Thus far, these investigations have not uncovered concrete evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden.

However, they have brought more attention to the business dealings of his son, Hunter Biden, which Republicans have questioned, as well as President Biden's awareness of his son's activities.

During a brief statement at the US Capitol, McCarthy asserted that there were "serious and credible" allegations concerning the president's behavior.

He suggested that these allegations collectively present a perception of a culture of corruption.

The White House swiftly condemned McCarthy's decision in response to this development.

White House spokesperson Ian Sams stated, "House Republicans have been investigating the President for nine months, and they've turned up no evidence of wrongdoing," adding, "Extreme politics at its worst."

Republicans and Speaker Kevin McCarthy

Speaker Kevin McCarthy initiated an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden on Tuesday, a move seemingly aimed at placating far-right lawmakers who have threatened to remove him from his leadership position unless he meets their demands for significant spending cuts that could lead to a government shutdown at the end of the month.

However, it's worth noting that several Republicans, including those representing districts won by President Biden, have indicated that they would not support an impeachment inquiry unless there is a clear connection between Hunter Biden's business dealings with foreign firms and his father or if there is evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors.

The timing of McCarthy's announcement appears to be driven by concerns within his party.

Representative Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida known for criticizing the speaker, had announced that he would deliver a speech on the House floor attacking McCarthy and advocating for his removal, the New York Times noted.

Shortly after McCarthy's announcement, Gaetz followed through with his speech, accusing the speaker of failing to fulfill his promises to right-wing lawmakers in exchange for their support during his previous bid for leadership.

White House Is Prepared for Joe Biden Impeachment

The White House's oversight and investigations team found itself amid the anticipated battle on Tuesday, following House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's announcement of a GOP-led House committee's decision to initiate an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

This move was seen as a form of retribution by Republicans, as House Democrats had impeached Donald Trump twice during his presidency, per CNBC.

In anticipation of this moment, the White House had been preparing a team of legal experts and spokespeople to address and counter congressional inquiries into the president and his son, Hunter Biden.

As calls for impeachment from the far-right wing of the GOP intensified in recent months, the newly formed White House war room responded by publicly refuting the accusations put forth by Republicans and highlighting the voices of GOP caucus members who remained skeptical of impeachment.
