Convicted Brazilian murderer Danilo Cavalcante managed to escape police, including dogs and aircraft, for almost two weeks. How did he manage to do that, though?

Shortly after his dramatic capture, the Brazil man spoke with investigators and actually divulged how he evaded capture for such a long time. Supervisory Deputy US Marshal Rob Clark spoke with CNN and talked about what the former prison escapee told them.

Clark noted that the 34-year-old convict admitted in the interview that he considered surrendering to authorities at one point, and this happened as hundreds of law enforcement officers were deployed to search for him in the Pennsylvania woods.

"He said it was very difficult living out there, but it wasn't difficult because of the environment or the terrain. It was difficult because the law enforcement presence was increasing every day," said the US Marshal. However, he also noted that Danilo Cavalcante "was a desperate man just trying to survive on a day-to-day basis."

Cavalcante told his interviewers that he "saw law enforcement officers walk within yards of him amid the thick brush," This happened three times. He also explained that he only moved under the cover of nightfall, and he strategically chose to travel only along the edge of tree lines and tried to familiarize himself with local roads.

He also told investigators about hearing a Portuguese audio message blaring from a helicopter overhead that was telling him to surrender. This made him think, "Wow, they have a Brazilian working for them now." Cavalcante also admitted that he "hid his fecal matter so investigators couldn't track him."

As Latin Post previously reported, the Brazil man tried to escape to Canada but was instead captured after police surrounded him and let loose a search dog named Yoda. The 4-year-old Belgian Malinois bit him in the scalp and then in the "nether regions."

Brazilian Murderer Danilo Cavalcante Now a Cult Hero in Latin America

Danilo Cavalcante's daring escape from a Pennsylvania prison did not just capture the imagination of people in the US but also in Latin America, where he was originally from. His escape inspired memes and countless TikTok videos talking about his exploits.

"It has the fun of a soap opera," one man in his native Brazil told the Washington Post. Another admitted, "I like to see Americans in bad shape," as many praised him for becoming a thorn in the side of US authorities.

This is despite Cavalcante being wanted back in Brazil for murder. This murder led to him killing his then-girlfriend in front of her children after he escaped to the US while on the run from Brazilian authorities.

Danilo Cavalcante's Brazil Murder Case Still Unsolved

Cavalcante is still wanted in Brazil where he allegedly shot and killed a man whose family members said owed him money. While he faces life in prison in the US, the case he is facing back home is still considered an unsolved case.

Since his Pennsylvania escape, Cavalcante's 2017 Brazil case was reopened, and a court hearing has already been scheduled for October 11. It is expected to go to a jury, probably next year, according to Fox 23. He is facing a maximum of 30 years in prison in his home country, which has more lenient rules regarding imprisonment.
