Belgium Vs. United States: A Look at Best Moments in World Cup History
The United States and Belgium haven't had the most success at the World Cup compared to some other countries.
Neither national team has been able to even make it to a World Cup final, but both teams will be playing each other for that very chance this Tuesday in Brazil. In the meantime, Latin Post.com honors both teams by counting down their most memorable moments in World Cup history:
United States
1930 - Team USA Has Best Finish Ever
Only 13 teams qualified for the first World Cup in 1930, but this was America's best finish ever. America advanced out of Group 4 by defeating Belgium and Paraguay while not allowing a single goal. Unfortunately for the U.S., their World Cup dreams were smashed with a 6-1 loss to Argentina in the semi-finals. Team USA hasn't made a semi-finals since.
1994 - USA Ends 64-Year Drought
After making the semifinals in 1930, America had high future expectations for the World Cup. However, in the next three World Cups, the United States failed to make it out of group play, and from 1954 to 1986, they didn't even qualify for the tournament. In 1994, for the first time in a long time, Team USA made it to the round of 16. Being the host nation that year didn't hurt, either.
2002 - USA Upsets Mexico in Round of 16
Mexico is the superior soccer country, but for some reason they struggle when it comes to the round of 16. After finishing second in Group D, Team USA would have to face Mexico and they were the underdogs. America led 1-0 for the majority of the game, but it wasn't until the 65th minute when Landon Donovan scored that Team USA had all but secured a place in the quarter-finals.
Belgium
1986 - Belgium Upsets Soviets and Spain
Belgium barely qualified for the knockout round in 1986 by finishing third place in Group B. Odds are, they were just going to be eliminated in the first round. In their first knockout game, they took on the Soviet Union and won a thrilling game 4-3 in extra time. This is where Jan Ceulemans became a superstar for Belgium. After scoring against the Russians, he would also score against Spain in the quarterfinals in a game that saw Belgium victorious in a shootout.
2002 - Belgium Eliminates Russia in Final Group Game
In 2002, Group H came down to a final game to determine which team would advance and which team was going home. Belgium and Russia faced off in the final game and Russia had a one-game advantage. Marc Wilmots scored in the 82nd minute giving Belgium a 3-1 lead and they would eventually win the game 3-2.
1990 - Belgium Qualifies for Round of 16
In 1990, Belgium got two close wins over Uruguay and South Korea in a competitive Group E. Belgium's narrow victories clinched their spot in the round of 16. Unfortunately for Belgium, they would lose against England in extra time during the knockout game. Guy Thys was the team's head coach during this successful run for Belgium.
