Joran van der Sloot, the long-time suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway, an Alabama teenager, is expected to enter a guilty plea to federal charges related to extortion and fraud in a Wednesday hearing, according to an attorney representing Holloway's family.

The specific charges to which he will plead guilty and the associated sentence remain undisclosed, according to CNN.

Van der Sloot, who was among the last individuals seen with 18-year-old Natalee Holloway before her disappearance, was indicted in 2010 on federal charges of extortion and wire fraud.

The charges against Joran van der Sloot are associated with an alleged scheme to sell information regarding the location of Natalee Holloway's remains in exchange for a sum of $250,000. This scheme is detailed in the indictment filed in the Northern District of Alabama.

John Q. Kelly, the attorney for the Holloway family, confirmed that van der Sloot intends to plead guilty and that part of the plea deal requires him to reveal information regarding how Holloway died and what happened to her body, thereby concluding the search for her remains.

Natalee Holloway Case

Natalee Holloway's disappearance has been a source of enduring agony for her family, with Joran van der Sloot providing conflicting and inconclusive accounts of the events surrounding her disappearance, ABC noted.

In light of his forthcoming plea, the family is expected to be present in court for the hearing. US District Judge Anna M. Manasco has ordered that victim impact statements from Holloway's parents and brother will be heard, but not from others who have requested to provide statements, before van der Sloot's sentencing.

Natalee Holloway vanished during a high school graduation trip to Aruba and was last seen leaving a bar with van der Sloot, who was a student at an international school.

While Joran van der Sloot was considered the main suspect and detained for questioning, no charges were filed in connection with the case.

Despite a declaration of Holloway's death by a judge, her body has never been found.

What Will Happen to Joran Van der Sloot if He Pleads Guilty?

If van der Sloot pleads guilty, it is expected that he will be promptly returned to Peru, where he is serving a 28-year prison sentence for the 2010 murder of Lima college student Stephany Flores, a crime that occurred five years to the day of Holloway's disappearance.

Under an extradition agreement, he was to be returned to Peru upon adjudication in Alabama to serve his remaining sentence there before any penalties in the US are considered, AL.com reported.

US Attorney Jay Town of the Northern District of Alabama has affirmed the US commitment to honoring its agreement with the Peruvian government, ensuring Joran van der Sloot's return to Peru to complete his sentence before addressing any potential penalties in the United States.
