Florida Man Games Announced, To Include 'Sports' Such as Beer Belly Wrestling and an 'Evading Arrest' Obstacle Course
The internet phenomenon known as "Florida Man" has now resulted in an Olympics-like event that celebrates the state's most infamous denizens called the Florida Man Games. However, you would not expect sports like basketball, pole vault, or normal wrestling here.
The Florida Man phenomenon has become infamous for showing that the truth is often stranger than fiction, and the Florida Man Games plans to celebrate that in a series of Florida-style competitions that organizers are planning to hold next year.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, the Florida Man Games are scheduled to be held in St. Augustine for the first time on February 24. The games are organized by St. Augustine native Pete Melfi, who owns "The 904 Now," a media outlet covering St. Johns County.
"We thought, 'How can we really play on these Florida Man headlines that we hear so much about? Someone gave me the idea to make it into an athletic competition," the organizer said when talking about how he dreamed up the games regarding Florida's most infamous denizens. "It's going to be a wild day of mud games and Florida-style obstacle courses. It's going to really be an opportunity to live that Florida Man life for a day."
When Melfi made the idea public, it garnered the attention of many in the Sunshine State. These include American Gladiators stars Dan "Nitro" Clark and Lori "Ice" Fetrick, and they will be serving as judges for the Florida Man Games. Other celebrities with Florida ties might also appear.
The event has been described by its official website as "This isn't just a competition; it's a one-of-a-kind Floridian spectacle!"
