After almost having his previous vice president hung, Donald Trump has now picked his next runningmate: Ohio Senate Republican JD Vance, a former Trump critic who fell in line to advance his political career. This came just days after the attempted assassination of the former president.

Before he fell in line like most other anti-Trump Republicans, Vance was a vocal critic of the former president. However, as he advanced his career, the Ohio Senator slowly became a Trump ally and an outspoken supporter of the former president, even helping spread his lies and misinformation.

"And despite all of my reservations about Donald Trump (I ended up voting third party), there were parts of his candidacy that really spoke to me," wrote Vance in his memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy." "For so many years, I and a few of my intellectual fellow travelers in the Republican Party were telling politicians to make precisely those sorts of arguments, Yet the populist rhetoric of the campaign hasn't informed the party's approach to governing. Unless that changes, I suspect Republicans will pay a heavy political price."

The announcement of Vance as Donald Trump's next vice president came ahead of the Republican National Convention (RNC) where Trump was set to be officially declared the Republican nominee. He slowly took over the RNC by having former RNC head Rona McDaniel kicked out and replaced by loyalists, including daughter-in-law Lara Trump.

As NBC News noted, it was House Speaker Mike Johnson who officially announced the Trump-Vance ticket, with Vance receiving loud applause and then cheers from the Republican crowd, who chanted, "JD! JD! JD!"

However, it was still a big surprise for the Ohio Republican who only found out that he was Trump's VP pick just 20 minutes before the actual announcement. He soon announced it himself too on social media.

Who Is JD Vance, Donald Trump's New Vice Presidential Pick?

Vance only graduated from Yale Law School in 2015. Soon after, he joined Mithril Capital, a venture capital firm run by the Silicon Valley scion Peter Thiel. However, a year later, he moved back to Ohio where he ran the nonprofit known as Our Ohio Renewal.

However, he ran for the US Senate and became one of Ohio's two senators in 2002 thanks to the donations from Thiel which was worth $10 million. Before that, he gained traction by saying, "I'm a Never Trump guy," and noted, "My god what an idiot," regarding his future running mate.

Donald Trump Vice Presidential Pick JD Vance Slammed for Comments After Trump Shooting

As expected of a Trump pick, Vance has also recently stirred up some controversy after the Donald Trump assassination attempt by spreading unfounded claims that it was Joe Biden's rhetoric that led the shooting, disregarding Trump's own rhetoric that has proven to have stoked political violence in the past, such as January 6.

"The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs, he stated. "That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination."

This led to David Axelrod, former senior adviser to then-President Obama, noting that Vance's response set the "wrong vibe at that moment," adding that "As we now are learning, the gunman's profile doesn't seem to match Vance's premise. But at least wait and see!"

This is a reference to the fact that the gunman was a registered Republican who came from a very conservative background and was an advocate for gun rights.
