Carlos Dunga Brazil: Former World Cup Champion Returns as Head Coach of Brazil
According to multiple reports, the Brazilian National Team has officially hired Carlos Dunga as their new head coach on Tuesday, July 22, to replace Luis Felipe Scolari, who retired.
Dunga is no stranger to Brazil the country or the soccer team. He was born and grew up in the small city of Ijuí and played for the team in two World Cups, 1990 and 1994. He would also coach the team at the 2010 World Cup, so it's safe to say he's right at home.
Playing as a middle-fielder for Brazil in 1994, Dunga was named team captain by Head Coach Carlos Parreira. Dunga would flourish as team captain and guided Brazil to the finals where they would meet European rivals, Italy. After a scoreless 120 minute game, a shootout ensued. He would score the eventual game-winning goal in the shootout as Brazil would defeat Italy 3-2.
He returned to the Brazilian team in 2010 as a coach. Dunbar led Brazil to a convincing Group G title, and the squad even made it to the quarterfinals. Unfortunately for Dunbar and Brazil, they lost to the Netherlands.
The 2014 host nation suffered an embarrassing loss when they lost to Germany in the semifinals by a score of 7-1. For most countries, making it this far would be a great success. But for Brazil, the expectations come higher as the five time World Cup Champions. They've competed and qualified for every World Cup and have won a game every World Cup year with the exception of 1934.
Luiz Felipe Scolari was a fan favorite, having coached the team twice in the past. His best year was in 2002 when he guided the Brazil to a finals victory over Germany. Scolari resigned after the 2014 World Cup when his squad lost in the third place game to the Netherlands. Bringing in Dunbar could give the team a new directional outlook after suffering such a bad outing.
Even though Brazil had huge injuries to Neymar and Thiago Silva in the final games, change to management can be a good thing. This team still has a lot of improvements to make before they win their sixth World Cup title.
Brazil will have a tougher task next World Cup because it will be hosted in Russia. Dunga will be under a lot of pressure to succeed from Brazil fans and improve from this year's debacle.
