David Tyree News: Giants Face Criticism After Hiring Controversial Former Player
The New York Giants have hired David Tyree to be their new director of player management.
Tyree played with the Giants for five seasons and helped the team win Super Bowl 42. His time with the Baltimore Ravens was very brief. Unfortunately for Tyree, he's been known more for his comments off the field than his performances on it.
In 2011, Tyree said he would trade away his Super Bowl helmet and the team's Super Bowl title if it meant keeping marriage between a man and a women. Tyree often takes to Twitter, sometimes arguing his points about marriage, science, and religion.
@ronbachar there are many former homosexual men & women in this country & no scientific data to support the claim of being born gay.

The Human Rights Campaign has already voiced their displeasure. Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin said "his basic opposition to basic legal equality aside, David Tyree's proselytizing of such dangerous practices goes against the positive work the Giants organization has done in recent years."
Tyree has also had had some questionable incidents off the field with alcohol and drugs. When he was 24 years old, Tyree was arrested for marijuana possession. Many wonder if he's even qualified for the job in the first place. If Tyree was hired as the Giants wide receiver coach, this probably wouldn't be a big issue. But, because he's being hired as Director of Player Management, he may have a say in the scouting department and drafting.
Tyree has declined to comment on the hire and the Giants have said that his past comments and actions are reflections of Tyree's, not the Giants.
The Giants need Tyree to focus on football, not spirituality, science, politics, and religion; especially with the young players. This certainly brings controversy to a team that is known for flying under the radar and avoiding drama. Tyree will be replacing Charles Way, who will be working with the NFL.
We've seen how controversial comments towards the gay community can end up. Former Super Bowl Head Coach Tony Dungy revealed that he wouldn't draft Michael Sam because he would be a "distraction." It's hard for Dungy to back that up when he supported Michael Vick, a well known dog killer a drug user. Head Coach Tom Coughlin has already said he's on-board and favors the hiring of Tyree.
Hopefully Tyree will put his religious views aside when it comes to his profession and focus on football and equality.
