FX 'American Horror Story' Season 4 Cast and Release Date: Make-Up Artist Nominated for an Emmy for 'Coven' Will Not Work on 'Freak Show'
Season 4 of "American Horror Story" will not have the same talent in its make-up department as Christien Tinsley has left the show.
According to IMDb, Tinsley has worked on the show since Season 1, "American Horror Story: Murder House." During his time with the show, he worked with prosthetic designers Jason Hamer and Mike Mekash, as well as make-up effects artists David L. Anderson, Rob Freitas, Eryn Krueger Mekash and Cristina Patterson, Variety reports.
In 2012, Tinsley and other members of the make-up team were nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup For A Series, Miniseries, Movie Or A Special for their work on "Murder House," and again in 2013 for Season 2, "American Horror Story: Asylum." Tinley and his team are also nominated for an Emmy this year for their bewitching contributions to Season 3, "American Horror Story: Coven."
These achievements were not easy for Tinsley. He told Variety that he often was given a script only a week before the episode was to be shot.
"We were extremely restricted by the schedule," Tinsley said.
Still, the team was able to succeed. For example, during "Coven," the team managed to make actress Kathy Bates seem like she was decapitated. They used Bates' head to make a clay replica, which they then sculpted details into. Next, they made a rubber mold and attached hair to it strand by strand.
"You can just imagine the intense amount of hours it takes to really do that correctly," Tinsley said.
The make-up artist understands how important the effects are to every actor's character.
"The actors try to create an arc with their character," Tinsley said. "Make-up is there to enhance that idea. That's what we do, and sometimes with makeup effects, you're building who that character becomes -- and who they are is the way they look."
Tinsley will not be a part of Season 4, "American Horror Story: Freak Show" as he will be working on "Westworld," a science fiction pilot for HBO.
"American Horror Story: Freak Show" premieres on FX in October. It takes places in 1950s Jupiter, Florida, and stars Jessica Lange as a German woman managing one of the last freak shows in the U.S.
