NBA Trade Rumors 2014: Andrew Wiggins' Coach Says He Wants to Go to Minnesota Timberwolves
Kansas head coach Bill Self revealed that his former player, Andrew Wiggins, is looking forward to being traded from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
In an interview during a basketball camp in Kansas on Sunday, Self said that Wiggins told him that he wants to play for the Timberwolves because the 2014 first overall pick believes that it will be better for his NBA career.
"When all this trade stuff started, I talked to Andrew and Andrew told me, 'I hope I get traded,' And I'm like, 'No you don't.' And he said, 'Coach, I do. It's better for me, knowing my personality and what I need to do, to go somewhere where I'm forced to be something as opposed to going in there where they're going to be patient with me and I'm going to be a piece," Self said via KU Sports.
Recent reports indicated that Wiggins will move to the Timberwolves before the end of the month since the 19-year-old rookie will only be eligible to be traded on Aug. 23 -- 30 days after signing his rookie deal with Cavaliers.
According to reports, the Cavaliers will send Wiggins along with Anthony Bennett and a 2014 first-round pick to the Timberwolves in exchange for All-Star forward Kevin Love.
While reports about a pending Cavaliers-Timberwolves trade only surfaced last week, Self insisted that Wiggins knew that he will be traded after the Las Vegas Summer League.
"I think the whole thing that's been blown out of proportion a bit is that he's been in limbo. He's known since the summer that he'd be traded. It's OK. In some ways he's looking forward to going to Minnesota," Self said.
Self initially thought that Wiggins would be in a good place in Cleveland since he will learn a lot from superstar LeBron James. But in terms of development, Self realized that Minnesota is a better place for the Canadian freshman because he could be the team's top option.
"Even though in a weird way everybody would love the opportunity to play with LeBron because you're guaranteed winning, for the longevity of his career, he needs to develop that mindset to be the guy, for him to be great, and I think being Minnesota will help him do that." Self said.
